Every childhood leaves memories of someone who left an indelible mark in one's past. Who was that somebody in your life? A young man, waiting at an airport, sees a brand of chocolate he hadn’t seen in years and reminiscences about somebody from his childhood he had forgotten; a family friend who used to visit their home every fortnight carrying a small gift of chocolates and who was fondly nicknamed ‘chocolate uncle’. For the boy, chocolate uncle was just another pleasant, affable, over-grown friend he could converse freely with every time. But when life took an unexpected twist and it was time for goodbyes, the child realised how different his grown-up friend had always been.

Review "The immigrant life and the chaos it creates in a child's mind is skillfully crafted by the author in the backdrop of the Gulf war. The author made me think of my own childhood and the loss of innocence in our present busy day to day life. I miss my childhood innocence when I could laugh and love without a second thought. A poignant read which made me smile and teary eyed - the mark of an excellent storyteller. I highly recommend reading it!" - Reader review, Amazon India "This short story is really heart touching.. Writer described it so well that you can actually feel and imagine each and every happening.. looking forward for more short stories from writer!!!" - Reader review, Amazon India "We all have those lovely memories from our childhood that we go over again and again, just so that we do not forget them, ever - those are the tiny pieces of someone that we once were. This story guided me to those, maybe-silly-but-dear thoughts once more. I thank the author for doing that in such simple words! Short and delightful!" - Reader review, Amazon India

Every person could have experienced these waiting times and the flow of memories which come to the mind, but not every person may be able to write them so beautifully , including all details eloquently and make them as an amazing short story ! I strongly recommend reading the book !

A young man is standing at the airport after returning from a trip from Dubai to Mumbai. After buying a box of chocolates for a gift, he sees a small piece of chocolate with the wrapping Kinder Surprise. This triggers a childhood memory of a man named Abdul, who worked with his father while they were living in Kuwait. Abdul would visit every other Thursday and use their telephone to call his family back home far away. Each time he visited, Abdul would bring a bag of chocolates, including a Kinder Surprise for Abdul and his older brother to share. The narrator retells his childhood memories of anticipation, excitement and later on a growing friendship with Abdul. Then one day the war with Iraq came; foreign workers were forced to return to India. Abdul is puzzled about why his chocolate uncle could not return to India with them. He learns that Abdul is from Pakistan, and that they would probably never see each other again. This story is poignant and well written. It is a wonderful coffee table book, and is a good choice for middle school or young adult readers for a classroom read aloud. Recommended for ages nine and older.
