  • The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (sometimes shortened to Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire) is a book of history written by the English historian Edward Gibbon, which traces the trajectory of Western civilization (as well as the Islamic and Mongolian conquests) from the height of the Roman Empire to the fall of Byzantium. It was published in six volumes. Volume I was published in 1776 and went through six printings. Volumes II and III were published in 1781;] volumes IV, V, and VI in 1788–89. The original volumes were published in quarto sections, a common publishing practice of the time. The work covers the history of the Roman Empire, Europe, and the Catholic Church from 98 to 1590 and discusses the decline of the Roman Empire in the East and West. Because of its relative objectivity and heavy use of primary sources, unusual at the time, its methodology became a model for later historians. This led to Gibbon being called the first "modern historian of ancient Rome".

Review ''I set out upon...Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire [and] was immediately dominated both by the story and the style . . . I devoured Gibbon. I rode triumphantly through it from end to end and enjoyed it all.'' --Winston Churchill ''[Gibbon] stood on the summit of the Renaissance achievement and looked back over the waste of history to ancient Rome, as from one mountain top to another.'' --Christopher Dawson, independent scholar, historian, and author ''Edward Gibbon, in The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, has always been my cynosure . . . Gibbon's mind was surely the most powerful and most lucid one that has appeared so far in the whole distinguished company of Western historians . . . Gibbon [produced] a masterpiece of historical research, construction, and writing which had no superior in its own genre in any literature.'' --Arnold Toynbee, historian and New York Times bestselling author

About the Author EDWARD GIBBON (1737-1794), an English historian and Member of Parliament, had little formal education. He went to Oxford, but was forced to leave when he converted to Roman Catholicism. His family then sent him to Lausanne, where he was reconverted to Protestantism. His most important work, The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, was published in six volumes between 1776 and 1788.

Considered the most scholarly collection of Gibbon's work By Drake-by-the-Lake I do not recommend buying an edition of "The Decline and Fall" based upon price alone, because for many reasons, which will become clearer to you after reading this complicated and scholarly work, the editions vary in content and price, nor does price alone guarantee quality. For many hours prior to purchasing, I researched the numerous editions offered by different publishers and read reviews, and discovered a consensus among Gibbon fans in favor of Womersley's unabridged edition, in part because it includes a complete and unmodernized text, Gibbon's own comments and notes, and his famous Vindication, a final and thorough answer to scurrilous critics of his time. All of this is provided at a quite reasonable price, considering the length of the work (in excess of 1,300 pages), albeit in soft cover which I find makes a book easier to read, if slightly less durable.I recommend buying this new edition from Amazon, instead of the used editions also offered here, because many of them, I discovered after investigating, are not the same as this one I am reviewing (ISBN 0-14-043393-7, which is Volume I). Like I said, there are many editions of Gibbon's masterpiece floating about, old and new, of varying quality and content. The vendors' failure to disclose the ISBN in their descriptions prohibits any purchase by the discriminating. Just pay the seventeen or so bucks for the new book, which is dirt cheap for a work of this magnitude. There should be no need to defend Gibbon nor his work, which is simply the best I have yet read. I loved history as a boy, even while reading the simple and often stupid books offered in school. Imagine how much more I enjoyed history written by such a master of prose as Gibbon, the most thorough, meticulous and honest historian I have yet encountered. We owe a debt of gratitude to a historian who has perused enormous quantities of ancient texts in Latin and Greek and other languages, such as would confound the vast majority of readers today, and with his formidable powers of intellect, analyzed their veracity, by comparing one against the other, and judged keenly of their worth. Gibbon had for his time a vast encyclopedic knowledge, for by his own admission, he devoted his life to reading. Gibbon's love was not among humans, but among books. He possessed an excellent understanding of government, which is the more understandable when you discover he served as a Member of Parliament for a number of years. His grasp of military science is explained in part by his service in the militia as an officer. To all these things, we must add an innate, profound understanding of human nature. Why bother with Gibbon? Why not read the original, the ancient and medieval writers, from whom Gibbon based his work? That is a good question that I asked myself. Here is the answer. We cannot trust the ancient writers to be truthful or accurate in every event. For one thing, they sometimes contradict each other, which means one or both are lying. Also, they leave out important details, which can be pieced together by circumstantial evidence, if you have found it by exhaustive research. This is where Gibbon comes in. He has performed exhaustive research that consumed a large portion of his scholarly and reflective lifetime. Gibbon is no fool, and never succumbs to the usual vices of enthusiasm or its opposite, cynicism. He is calm, rational, penetrative; just the guide and the mentor you want. He never takes an ancient historian at face value without considering their motives, prejudices, passions, and even their personal histories. Gibbon has studied not just the history, but the historians, and the history of the historian's countries. Not only has Gibbon accumulated and summarized the ancient and medieval texts, but interpreted and analyzed with his considerable deductive powers, to form a whole that is greater than the parts. Thus a novice does better with Gibbon than with the original. Gibbon's copious notes explain where has made interpretations, leaving you free to form different conclusions, should you desire. Some reviewers are peeved that Gibbon suffers an opinion that disagrees with their own, and for this reason alone, they degrade his work. I experience the same treatment by those who are alarmed that my reviews have an actual opinion instead of being a rubber stamp marked "PERFECTION". If this intolerant philosophy were carried on, then no-one should dare express an unseasonable opinion of anything at all, and we should all become a tribe of dullards. Of course Gibbon expresses many opinions, some the inevitable product of his country, class and times; and this is the mark of intellectual honesty. You should never read without a critical mind, and should be prepared to disagree with an author on some issues, as I do with Gibbon, while agreeing with him on others. I especially favor his ideas concerning the causes and effects of the rise of Christianity, many of which can be observed today.Look to find a better history than this, in any language, written during any time since the advent of letters. Look far and wide, as long as you like... and then revisit Gibbon, and see whether you have yet found an equal.

A review written in 1844 By Slioch Found in a letter dated February 13 1844 from my great-great-great-uncle George Mackenzie in India to his sister Alice in Scotland: "Have you ever read Gibbon's Decline & Fall of the Roman Empire? I am very fond of it for many reasons. It is a grand book and to read it always makes me feel as if my life extended thousands instead of tens of years and as if I could trace out the revolutions of Empires. It is beautifully written and the English of it is to my taste particularly elegant, and except where Gibbon's judgement was obscured by his prejudice, it is true as history can be. His reasonings from the great events which he relates are generally speaking very true and I have heard that there is hardly a better guide for a politician than that history. What an immensely long duration the time of it is - from the year 90 after Christ till the year 1490 or thereabouts in fact almost down to our own times. It is a great ornament to my bookcase and I often read it & prefer it to any novel whatsoever." So the 5 stars are on behalf of Uncle George who sadly died later in 1844 aged 25.

Blankenship Well, after more than a year of off and on reading I finally finished the first volume of Gibbon's vast chronicle and only have five massive books to go. All in all it has been a wonderful journey, tedious at times, but wonderful! This first volume was first published in 1776 and now, after over 200 years still stands as one of the great pillars in the cannon of Western Literature and of course is still a framework used by historians even to this day. There are of course three aspects of this work that need to be considered. The first of course is the history. Gibbon is considered by many as the first modern historian. He broke new ground (more about that later), and gives us a very good view of the Roman Empire as seen through the eyes of a man of his time. Secondly, this is most certainly a literary work of no mean quality. It is actually an absolute gem; a work of art is words. Third, there is the history of the history; the placing of Gibbons work as a historical event within itself, which is sometimes overlooked. Now shear volumes have been written concerning this early study of the Roman culture, both critical and laudatory. I have great doubts that anything I say here will add to this mound of observations which have been gathering since the ink dried on the first printing of the work. I can only give you, the reader, my personal perspectives; keeping in mind that I am not in anyway a historian, theologian nor literary master. No, I am just a common `good old boy,' living in the hills that likes to read, loves history and enjoys a reading challenge.I have a bound set of these books on my bookshelf and I must admit that they sat there for a couple of years. I would stare at them now and then, fondle them at times late at night, but through shear intimidation of the size, kept putting it off and off. Years ago I did the same thing with Will Durant's massive, multi-volume `The Story of Civilization' before I followed the advice of the shoe commercial..."Just do it." I have never regretted that. Much the same is holding true for Gibbon's work; I decided to "just do it."Before I go on with the book review, I have some personal suggestions, if I may be so bold, as to the approach is reading this work. First, get over the magnitude of the mass of words found here. Take this first volume is small doses. I will not lie to you; the reading of this first volume is hard word, especially for someone like me with limited intellectual abilities and who is woefully lacking in formal education in this field. Let not this distract you though. You need not have a wonderful educational background or bright and shinning intellect to learn; to come to appreciate the essence of this work. Secondly, when you first start, take the work and break it down into small sections. I would sometimes take an hour just of read and savor a single paragraph, reading it over and over again. The arcane language; the convoluted and complex sentence and paragraph structure (May I use the term "mulifarious?"), will suddenly pop for you (hopefully), and will be like candy to your eye and mind. I further broke the work down into sections, actually taking them out of order. Indeed, I started reading this volume by beginning with the famous, or infamous, depending on how you look at it, Chapters 15 and 16. (More about this later). To continue, I would also, unless you are already pretty familiar with the chronological history of the Roman Empire, suggest that you have a good outline, a simple outline, of Roman history available. The plethora of rulers, gods, players, etc., can be a bit overwhelming and I found myself quickly lost trying to keep all the players straight. Thank goodness for google and Wikipedia...both were a tremendous help!I would also encourage you to give the work, as to the writing, a chance. At first, like me, many will find the style as was used in this era difficult to follow. Fear not though, as you read it will begin to flow and suddenly you will find yourself absolutely delighted...or not. If not, then it would probably be best to drop the book and go on to something else...each of us is quite different you know.It is quite interesting to note that vestiges of Gibbons work are alive and well even to this day. I happen to be in the process of reading two works at this time (concurrently), by Charles Freeman...A.D. 381: Heretics, Pagans, and the Dawn of the Monotheistic State and his previous work, The Closing of the Western Mind: The Rise of Faith and the Fall of Reason These are very nice and well written books and I am enjoying each and learning much. But when you get right down to it, from what I have read so far in these two works, we are getting a very strong dose of Gibbon, warmed over by Freeman. (I must state that Freeman is much easier to read...a delight, as a matter of fact).I think that one of the (from a historical aspect) things I appreciate the most about Gibbons work is that he was one of the fist historians that treated the writings of the Catholic Church as secondary documents rather than primary. This had not been done all that much before as the Church pretty well had a lock on things; not only religion, but history and science also. This was a bold step on Gibbons part and he certainly took a beating for it at the time...still is, come to think of it. Had Gibbons written what he wrote just a few years sooner, changes are pretty good he would have been fried or toasted. Anyway, in my opinion, for what it is worth, this was a good thing and certainly could, in my mind, be considered intellectual progress weather or not you agree with him.Was it worth the time I took to read this work? From my point of view and considering my needs; yes! Will I read the rest of the volumes? Well, I will attempt, although at my age and considering my reading speed, it is quite problematic as to weather or not I will finish them.NOTE: It should be noted that this entire work...all six volumes, can be downloaded to your Kindle for free. This is a good thing. I have not done this yet as I have the printed versions here, but I did take a brief look on a friend's Kindle. These down loads are good, but the quality is not the best and there are a few pages missing here and there...but hey, they are free so you cannot complain too much, you know. I have so many books downloaded in my little reading machine I need to do some catch-up before I continue.Don BlankenshipThe Ozarks

George Eliot’s beloved masterpiece in a Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition with a foreword by Rebecca Mead, author of the bestselling memoir My Life in Middlemarch A triumph of realist fiction, George Eliot’s Middlemarch: A Study of Provincial Life explores a fictional nineteenth-century Midlands town in the midst of sweeping change. From Library Journal Though not out of print, this popular title is being added to the venerable "Modern Library" line to coincide with a PBS Masterpiece Theatre miniseries. Wonderful, compelling book By Shelby Miller I took up this book because it was on a booklist of the 100 best books written, and I have to agree. It took awhile to get into it because there's a great deal of expository writing at the beginning, but stick with it and you'll be introduced to some fascinating characters in the town of Middlemarch.Dorothea Brooke is a young woman about to take a much older husband, determined to find purpose in her life by assisting him with his life's work, a book which is to a definitive guide to all the mythologies of the world. When she begins to suspect her husband's work is little more than empty piffle, how will she find her way?Mr. Lydgate is a hotshot young physician determined to do great works from the small town of Middlemarch. Thwarted by small town suspicion and politics, and increasingly saddled by debt incurred by a pretty young wife, how will he cope as his life's dream slips away?Fred Vincy is the son of a town merchant determined to see him made a gentleman. He's paid for Fred to recieve a gentleman's education at Oxford with the intention that Fred will join the Church. Fred knows the Church isn't for him, but isn't sure what else to do, nor how to tell his father his education was for naught. These are just three of a huge cast of characters, all of them fascinating in their own way as their lives intersect. The book feels more like a documentary than a novel, and you grow to feel as if the characters could be your own friends and neighbors. Highly recommended, I know this is going to be one of my favorite books.

This is the greatest novel written in English By Joanna Daneman Yes, that is a strong statement, but I believe Middlemarch to be the best novel written in English. And English is a rich language, overflowing with worthy works from both sides of the Atlantic, India and beyond. The only novel as a close contender on my list is Jane Eyre, with its fearsome symmetry and romantic passion.George Eliot has been the bane of students everywhere who suffer reading Silas Marner in high school. But later on, you, like me, may develop a taste for the classics and this book will reward you richly. The story is about Dorothea, a young, idealist woman, born to a good family with a modest fortune of her own. She is a prime catch on the wife market--money, family name, good looks. Her parents are deceased and her friends and uncle seek to pair her up with a local baron as the ideal mate. But Dorothea, bookish, religious and dreamy, has other ideas. She chooses, instead, a superannuated cleric who finally decides to marry as he feels mortality and ill health upon him. Casaubon, the vicar of a nearby rural church is a good match except....he's old, ugly and what the heck is he doing marrying such a young beauty. But Dorothea, who's imagining a sort of superior father figure who could "teach you even Hebrew, if you wished it" wakes up to far less than a reality of marital bliss. And there's an added complication created by her unworthy husband that has dire consequences for the young Dorothea. The subsequent examination of marriage as a partnership in hell is written with stunning modernity. Eliot not only creates the disastrous marriage of Dorothea to Casaubon, but also pairs, as a comparison, Lydgate, a doctor and his frivolous, vain, uncaring wife. The relationship of marriage to society is never more well drawn, but the internal suffering of people trapped in loveless marriage is written with sympathy and cunning insight. Eliot herself had a live-in relationship with Henry Lewes, who could not divorce his wife. She undoubtedly wrote from personal experience. The insight into human nature, such as jealousy, disappointment, recrimination, loss of trust and a feeling of desperation are themes that anyone who has ever been in a relationship will recognize as truth. If you find classic literature hard going, watch the mini-series created based on the book. Then, knowing the general plot, you might enjoy the structure and language of the novel more.

It was so very thick, the print so small, the pages so thin! It looked dauntingly long and dull. But when I finally picked it up out of a sense of obligation (after all, I majored in English, and it is a highly acclaimed classic) I was amazed to find myself laughing out loud on the very first page!Dorothea, Eliot's heroine, is SO very earnest, SO idealistic and ardent! She would never be so tawdry as to fuss with her hair and dress, or wear (gasp!) jewelry in public! She is interested only in bettering the lives of the poor in their neighborhood (you could visualize her at the fore of a modern anti-war protest). But when her sister draws her into trying on their mother's old jewelry, the pure beauty of an emerald ring inspires her to decisively choose it as her own. And she stubbbornly ignores any inconsistency between that decision and her ideals. But her idealism traps her into marriage with a man who is not at all what she believes. She sees him as a paragon of learning, questing the seas of knowledge with fearless curiousity. In actuality, he turns out to be a cautious and small-minded scholar, drily obsessed with minor points of criticism on others works. Poor Dorothea strives to find ways to hold constant in her love in the face of ugly truth. And when she meets young Will Ladislaw, a man of similar idealism and energy, she fights to stay on her moral high ground. Thank goodness the dry old scholar dies! But even after death, he manages to poison the possibility of Dorothea and Will ever making a life together.Around this couple swarm their relatives and acquaintances, and others quests for their best lives. Each couple and each character is amusing and absorbing in their own way.Eliot's characters are introduced and drawn so very well that each personality is fully believable and real. But beyond that, Eliot looks at all of them, the best and the worst, from a viewpoint of loving and gentle amusement. Her pithy comments are hilarious, but never malicious. She draws the reader into her own frame of mind, and invites us to look at the variety of our fellow humans with compassion and laughter. In spite of its length, and several dizzy plunges into despair, this is a light and lively story, very readable and heartwarming.

Ashby The book was written around the turn of the 19th century so all the pecularities of culture, language, and New England life are evident. If you like history, and I do, This is an added dimension that contributes to the fast moving story of two young menat a crossroad in their lives. They choose a path not designed for them by their parents and adults in their lives. The novel is exciting and well written and characters are well developed.

Arena Take a look at the illustrations in this coloring book and ask yourself what it is that you see... There are no wrong answers, because whatever it is that you see is what you can make it using color and suggestions of texture that you create with crayons, gel pens, colored pencils... Just kick back and let your mind wander, letting go of all your stress and have the satisfaction of bringing the illustrations to life in your own individual way! Bonus: each illustration is printed twice, so you and a friend can complete it on your own and see just how differently your creativity works. Happily, I did receive a sample of this book for review, and I totally enjoyed it. This is a really fun coloring book for older kids to adults who aren't afraid to make their own statement with abstract art!

I conceive that the origin, the growth, the decline, and the fall of those speculations respecting the existence, the powers, and the dispositions of beings analogous to men, but more or less devoid of corporeal qualities, which may be broadly included under the head of theology, are phenomena the study of which legitimately falls within the province of the anthropologist. And it is purely as a question of anthropology (a department of biology to which, at various times, I have given a good deal of attention) that I propose to treat of the evolution of theology in the following pages.

The Evolution of Theology: an Anthropological Study, by Thomas Henry Huxley

About the Author Thomas Henry Huxley PC FRS (4 May 1825 – 29 June 1895) was an English biologist (comparative anatomist), known as "Darwin's Bulldog" for his advocacy of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Huxley's famous 1860 debate with Samuel Wilberforce was a key moment in the wider acceptance of evolution, and in his own career. Huxley had been planning to leave Oxford on the previous day, but, after an encounter with Robert Chambers, the author of Vestiges, he changed his mind and decided to join the debate. Wilberforce was coached by Richard Owen, against whom Huxley also debated whether humans were closely related to apes. Huxley was slow to accept some of Darwin's ideas, such as gradualism, and was undecided about natural selection, but despite this he was wholehearted in his public support of Darwin. He was instrumental in developing scientific education in Britain, and fought against the more extreme versions of religious tradition. In 1869 Huxley coined the term 'agnostic' to describe his own views on theology, a term whose use has continued to the present day (see Thomas Henry Huxley and agnosticism). Huxley had little formal schooling and taught himself almost everything he knew. He became perhaps the finest comparative anatomist of the latter 19th century. He worked on invertebrates, clarifying relationships between groups previously little understood. Later, he worked on vertebrates, especially on the relationship between apes and humans. After comparing Archaeopteryx with Compsognathus, he concluded that birds evolved from small carnivorous dinosaurs, a theory widely accepted today. The tendency has been for this fine anatomical work to be overshadowed by his energetic and controversial activity in favor of evolution, and by his extensive public work on scientific education, both of which had significant effects on society in Britain and elsewhere.

Hale Thomas Henry Huxley, _Evolution of Theology: An Anthropological Study_, Hard Press, no date. paperback, pp.41.While it is good that the works of Thomas Huxley should remain in print, the presentation of the recent Hard Press edition (no date), leaves a lot to be desired. This edition provides no details about the original date of publication [1886], nor indeed, any introductory or biographical information on Huxley, on his career, or the importance of this essay in the context of his biological, philosophpical and political writings. Rather, the first words of the book are Huxley's own. This might perhaps be all well and good to the general reader, but in addition to this, and arguably more troubling, is the fact that the text has clearly not been adequatley proof read. There are passages where html commands are present in the text, and instead of the Greek passages and words of the original, the editor has chosen just to insert the word "Greek". To make matters worse, the footnote references do not tally with the note numbering in the text.Huxley was an eminent scholar, and this essay is important in considering his naturalistic views on theology, but this particular edition does little service. Indeed, one would be better served consulting the Huxley website, where a more accurate and informative version could be garnered. In short, the Hard Press edition needs to go back to the editor's office for what are, in all honesty, elementary revisions before being re-presented to the book-buying public.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Mind blowing By Pax Romana "From my present point of view, theology is regarded as a natural product of the operations of the human mind, under the conditions of its existence, just as any other branch of science, or the arts of architecture, or music, or painting are such products. Like them, theology has a history. Like them also, it is to be met with in certain simple and rudimentary forms; and these can be connected by a multitude of gradations, which exist or have existed, among people of various ages and races, with the most highly developed theologies of past and present times."PROs:* Extreme attention to detail* Very dedicated to truthfulness and accuracy* Very unbiased* Clearly explains how theology evolves independent of culture and geography* Huxley uses personal anecdotes and quotes authorities in their respective fields* Contains lots of information* Opens you up to new ways of thinkingCONs:* Almost exclusively talks about Western theology* A bit dry at times, especially in the beginning* Can be very difficult to grasp at points* Huxley could be a little more skeptical"It must be remembered that the literature of the old Israelites, as it lies before us, has been subjected to the revisal of strictly monotheistic editors, violently opposed to all kinds of idolatry, who are not likely to have selected from the materials at their disposal any obvious evidence, either of the practice under discussion, or of that ancestor-worship which is so closely related to it, for preservation in the permanent records of their people."Let me start off by saying that this is quite possibly the best book I've ever read. I certainly didn't think it would be when I started it, as the first few pages are quite complex and boring. Once you get what Huxley is trying to convey and are used to his writing style, the book becomes exponentially better.I am shocked that this book is practically unknown; to me, it is a classic. As the title suggests, Huxley brilliantly charts out the evolution of theology. He goes into extreme detail on the topic of what the ancient Israelites believe - in fact, he gives multiple translations of words from Hebrew to English in the Bible from the top translators of his day in order to convey the most accuracy possible. Huxley shows that all primitive theologies, including that of the Israelites, don't necessarily believe in gods, but have a foundation in the belief in ghosts (that the 'essence' of humans survives the death of the body). Belief in gods is simply a manifestation of this more fundamental belief in ghosts. How developed this theology is depends on the civilization - some simply believe in ghosts, others believe they can be communicated with via divination or witchcraft, and even more sophisticated, such as that of the Jews, derived their ethics from this theology. Example:"And those who will carefully study the so-called "Mosaic code" contained in the books of Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers, will see that, though Jahveh's prohibitions of certain forms of immorality are strict and sweeping, his wrath is quite as strongly kindled against infractions of ritual ordinances. Accidental homicide may go unpunished, and reparation may be made for wilful theft. On the other hand, Nadab and Abihu, who "offered strange fire before Jahveh, which he had not commanded them," were swiftly devoured by Jahveh's fire; he who sacrificed anywhere except at the allotted place was to be "cut off from his people"; so was he who ate blood; and the details of the upholstery of the Tabernacle, of the millinery of the priests' vestments, and of the cabinet work of the ark, can plead direct authority from Jahveh, no less than moral commands."Huxley also shows the intermingling of different theologies among the Semitic peoples and the Egyptians, and how the Egyptian code of ethics, mostly found in their 'Book of the Dead' is similar yet superior to its Biblical counterpart. He then compares cultures that have had absolutely no prior contact to Western civilization, such as the Polynesians, with the theology of the ancient Jews, showing that again, they are nearly identical. Huxley concludes that the pinnacle of theology was reached by the Israelite prophets, such as Ezra, in and around the 4th and 5th centuries BCE.Most amazingly, Huxley demonstrates that Christian theology, the combination of Greek philosophy and Jewish scripture (brought on by Philo of Alexandria), with its vague, esoteric, and allegorical interpretations, has sent theology spiralling into a regression. A new form of paganism, with the worship of the Virgin Mary and Saints, has been ushered in; idolatry is more popular than ever with pictures of crosses and crucifixes - in fact, Huxley says that if Jesus could see Christianity, he would conclude that it is a blasphemous religion, and etc.Huxley explains how theology evolved due to internal struggle and criticism, but lately, it is coming under fire from the outside due to secular forces, such as science. Eventually these forces will push theology back to its origins, completely divorced from ethics. This is truly mind blowing stuff and I can't recommend it enough."With the growth of civilisation in Europe, and with the revival of letters and of science in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the ethical and intellectual criticism of theology once more recommenced, and arrived at a temporary resting-place in the confessions of the various reformed Protestant sects in the sixteenth century; almost all of which, as soon as they were strong enough, began to persecute those who carried criticism beyond their own limit. But the movement was not arrested by these ecclesiastical barriers, as their constructors fondly imagined it would be; it was continued, tacitly or openly, by Galileo, by Hobbes, by Descartes, and especially by Spinoza, in the seventeenth century; by the English Freethinkers, by Rousseau, by the French Encyclopaedists, and by the German Rationalists, among whom Lessing stands out a head and shoulders taller than the rest, throughout the eighteenth century; by the historians, the philologers, the Biblical critics, the geologists, and the biologists in the nineteenth century, until it is obvious to all who can see that the moral sense and the really scientific method of seeking for truth are once more predominating over false science. Once more ethics and theology are parting company."

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography "The Shunned House" is a novelette by H. P. Lovecraft in the horror fiction genre. Written on October 16–19, 1924, it was first published in the October 1937 issue of Weird Tales. The Shunned House of the title is based on an actual house in Providence, Rhode Island, built around 1763 and still standing at 135 Benefit Street; Lovecraft was familiar with the house because his aunt, Lillian Clark, lived there in 1919-20 as a companion to Mrs. H. C. Babbit. But it was another house in Elizabeth, New Jersey that actually provoked Lovecraft to write the story. As he wrote in a letter: On the northeast corner of Bridge Street and Elizabeth Avenue is a terrible old house — a hellish place where night-black deeds must have been done in the early seventeen-hundreds — with a blackish unpainted surface, unnaturally steep roof, and an outside flight of stairs leading to the second story, suffocatingly embowered in a tangle of ivy so dense that one cannot but imagine it accursed or corpse-fed. It reminded me of the Babbit House in Benefit Street.... Later its image came up again with renewed vividness, finally causing me to write a new horror story with its scene in Providence and with the Babbit House as its basis. This location is at present[when?] the site of a plaza named in honor of Winfield Scott, who was the namesake of Lovecraft's father.

Slow (almost nonexistent) plot, sparse characters. And I loved it.This is an example of master craftsmanship as even though it is basically a history of a house without any overt personalization or interest in many of the things that drive us to enjoy a book, Lovecraft is able to write each word so that an atmosphere of terror slowly pervades the senses. A great read for someone learning how to drive fear by making each word matter.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The Ultimate House of Horror By Pop Bop There are lots of haunted house books and stories around. They run the gamut from moody little bits of Victorian spine tingling to mega-bloody gore fests. This story, though, has a special appeal that is unique and intriguing. It is not just a story, it is more like a master class lesson in writing dread, threat and horror. We don't really have a plot. Character development is not a priority. Not a great deal "happens". This is a portrait of a house and a recounting of its tainted history. It is a demonstration of how to write horror, terror and implacable creeping menace. It's entertaining and it delivers a full measure of Lovecraft's special supremely well-crafted style of crazy weird fiction. Here's an interesting exercise. If you found this book on the Amazon Kindle site the book was displayed with just the bland red and yellow generic cover they use for out-of-copyright freebies. Read the first chapter of this story in which the house is described and its miasmatic decay is first addressed. Now, go to the Hardcover edition site and call up the original Virgil Finlay cover illustration from "Weird Tales" that appears there. That picture is absolutely one hundred per cent what you likely have in your head after reading Lovecraft's first chapter. I'm not impressed by the fact that one picture can replace a thousand words; I'm amazed that only one thousand words from Lovecraft can so successfully paint a picture like that. So, if you'd like a first taste or just a little touch of H.P. Lovecraft, this is a very nice place to begin. A happy find.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. descriptions within the book will overload your senses By Lizzy Lessard No book blurb is available for this short story by H. P. Lovecraft, however the descriptions within the book will overload your senses. Lovecraft braids together mood and visual details to paint a picture of quite possibly the most repulsive and horrifying haunted house. The narrator (never named) and his uncle are obsessed with this haunted house. The story deviates from the present to include the horrible history of the house and its inhabitants, so when it returns to the present to follow the narrator through a night spent with his uncle in the house's cellar, you experience the same dread and anticipation as the characters.THE SHUNNED HOUSE also has quite possibly the longest sentence ever written.

Even though Darcy and Elizabeth still went through the ordeal of Hunsford, the meeting again at Pemberley, Wickham and Lydia's recovery and marriage, both loved the other deeply. Colonel Fitzwilliam worried about Darcy's health, travels to Longbourn to get Elizabeth, because in his fevered state called her name consistently. The colonel and doctor felt that if she was here at Pemberley, he'd recover faster. And so he did recover with Elizabeth at his side. Finally back at his former weight and strength returning rapidly, he and Elizabeth were married in Pemberley's Chapel. Even though it was for the most part a happy story, I was wishing for more. Just into the story and it's over.

A Sweet Story By Scrapper Very short so there is not much build up in anxiety or true suspense about the outcome of Darcy's illness, and I have read a similar story with Georgiana being the one who asks Elizabeth to come to Pemberley because her brother is very sick and might die. That story had more misunderstanding and struggles while this one is a short sweet read.I wish there would have been more to Elizabeth's tending to Darcy during his illness, but that part of the story was omitted.

When Lord Wolfenden saw, in the supper-room of the Milan Restaurant, a beautiful woman and became acquainted with her by saving the life of her elderly companion, the mysterious Mr. Sabin, as they leave the restaurant, he little knew the web of intrigue into which he was entering. For someone who was supposed to be so horrible, I was left wondering when anything really terrible was going to happen. And the ending seemed to be so out of character. Without spoiling it for someone who may read it, I was very dissapointed in the ending.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A fine book that hardly seems dated By W. Brown We don't read Oppenheim in America, and he may no longer be read in UK, for all I know. But John Buchan (The Thirty Nine Steps) once said of him that he was the "greatest Jewish writer since Isaiah". This book is a good read, a political spy novel with intensity, and it is from the 19th century. It's public domain and better than most $25 contemporary novels. Download and enjoy.

After reading The Great Impersonation which I enjoyed, I was expecting not such a far-fetched plot, which I considered silly. Talk about people living in a fantasy, dream world, it is hard to take the title character seriously.

In the case of poet Richard Hugo's autobiography, I found I needed to put it down occasionally. The book is so intense, so brutally truthful, that the reader has to take a break and walk away from it periodically, just a prize-fighter needs that break between rounds. Growing up on West Marginal Way with his grandparents in Seattle, going through his tour as a bombardier, his early life and eventual emergence as one of the top nation's best poets - and certainly one of the top poetry teachers - Hugo spares neither himself nor the reader. Although modern-day Americans are accustomed to seeing blood and gore on the TV screen, few are prepared for the concussive effects of Hugo's unflinching reminiscences. When the book finally is put down at the end, it stays with the reader, as does an admiration for the extreme courage Hugo took in putting all this down on paper.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Ripley did good By Bob I've never before reviewed the autobiography of a person I knew intimately. Hugo was my teacher, my friend, and a guy I got drunk with on a regular basis. At the time, we both thought alcohol offered something.Nevertheless, this book told me things about Dick that I did not know. It seems he was not only an interesting guy to know, but an interesting guy to know about. If you read "Degrees of Gray in Phillipburg" -- [...] -- or the Lady in Kinging Horse Reservoir -- [...] -- you will probably be intrigued enough by Hugo's talent to buy his life story.Ripley was his last wife. I've never met her, but she seems an incredibly strong woman. She dragged him out of the deep hole he'd dug for himself. If you want to know how a very good poet develops out of the clay of the middle-class Northwest, read this book.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. His Star Gets Brighter With Time By R. MacNeal Whether a long-time admirer, or new to Richard Hugo's poetry, this autobiography will give you a much broader context in which to read or re-read Hugo's significant body of work.It contains a non-chronological series of biographical stories about his background. The stories are interspersed with selected poems that are grounded in, or spring from, the gist of the stories. This strikes me as the most complete and intellectually honest way in which to present poetry.I re-read this book after visiting the ACTUAL West Marginal Way, an industrial road that follows the Duwamish waterway south of Seattle (and northeast of Hugo's home town White Center). My pilgrimage to West Marginal Way occurred on a boundless blue-sky day last August...not quite the contents of Hugo's briefcase, but, in the essence of this fine poet, it turned out I was the lone visitor at a roadside stop along West Marginal Way where a empty train right-of-way dissects a picnic-less municipal park (probably built as an afterthought by folks from a better part of town). This book will not disappoint you.

Best PDF Ebook Miss Georgiana Darcy of Pemberley: A Pride & Prejudice Sequel and Companion to the Darcys of Pemberley, by Shannon Winslow

What's Georgiana Darcy's story? Jane Austen tells us so little in Pride and Prejudice that we're left to wonder. How did the early loss of her parents shape Miss Darcy's character? And what about her near-disastrous affair with Mr. Wickham? Is that the true source of her shyness? She adores her brother and his new wife, Elizabeth, but will their guiding influence be enough to steer Georgiana clear of new trouble as she comes of age and falls in love again?

This work is intended as a companion of sorts to The Darcys of Pemberley (sequel to Pride and Prejudice). Both novels are unique and complete in themselves, but together they supply a richer experience than either one alone. The earlier book focused primarily on Darcy and Elizabeth's relationship during their early married life. There was a third Darcy represented in the title, however. Now she and her courtship story take center stage in Miss Georgiana Darcy of Pemberley.

By tachi1 The author took a previous book she had written (The Darcy's of Pemberley) and re-wrote it from Georgiana's point of view. I had read the first book a long time ago and, while parts of this one were familiar, it still felt like a different--and very good--book. I enjoyed it so much I'm now re-reading the first one while this one is fresh in my mind, and I'm enjoying the experience. This book shows how Georgiana matures, how she develops strength of character and confidence, and how her relationship with Lizzy and her brother have helped shape her as a woman, not just a girl. It is a lovely coming of age story and a sweet (and sometimes painful) romance.

It was an interesting experience to read "Darcys of Pemberley" from Georgiana's point of view. This change in POV is much more than the retelling of the same story, it provides a whole new sequel to P&P. Like its predecessor it is written in an Austenesque style which is especially evident early on and carries through throughout the novel. I followed the author's recommendation in "About the Author" and reread "Darcys of Pemberley." I've read dozens of P&P variations and rarely reread them. I found the recommendation an excellent one and highly recommend that those who enjoy this novel read or reread "Darcys of Pemberley." I also want to mention that this novel is very professionally edited, much more so than the typical examples of JAFF. I found the book to be a real page turner and sat down and read it straight through. If you enjoy reading P&P variations I highly recommend this novel.

By Dave in Oklahoma This novel covers Georgiana Darcy coming of age with much introspection and self discovery. While it is a companion to Shannon's previous tale, this story does stand alone - it will not matter greatly if you read this one first. In fact, if you read this one first, you will enjoy reading "Darcys of Pemberley" for a very different perspective - this story is from Georgiana's point of view and experiences.I never before thought much of Georgiana's life outside of being a filler person defining Darcy's character. Well! With this novel, Georgiana is actually a character in and of herself - Darcy is used to define HER character!I have always wondered about Darcy's heavy protection of Georgiana - beyond the Wickham incident. This story gives a very plausible answer for the behaviors of both. It explains why Darcy became so overprotective, to the detriment of Georgiana's development. The characters in this story seem to follow canon and behave similar to the original book. The book covers Georgiana's innermost reflections on what her life at Pemberley was like and her dreams of the future. Who knew fairies were involved in her early years and were the source of nightmares! The first half of the novel is the reflective calm before the storm, filling in gaps left unrecorded in the JA original. There are flashbacks into her past, and her feelings regarding her suitors are revealed. Considering a life away from Pemberley causes Georgiana to realize she is not prepared to be mistress of any great house. What will she do? The story draws you into the plot to the point you MUST know how it turns out. What happens in the second half? Be not concerned, after angst left and right, all will be well. But how? No spoilers here - you have to discover her fate for yourself!
