CAREER SCHOOL tells the story of a prestigious Philadelphia college selling its soul to make a profit.  Its heroes include Oliver Dunbar, a kind-hearted school director and twenty-year advocate of education, now forced against his will to think like a businessman; Lily Espirito, a beautiful but ruthless admissions director who will let nothing stop her from making her enrollment goals; Louise, a cynical bursar; Ethel, the stalwart dean; and David, a financial aid director who would rather be painting.  It's a story of academic integrity clashing with greed, scandal, sex, and human frailty, set at an institution of higher learning where students come from all economic spheres--from the wealthy Main Line suburbs to the city's worst housing projects--with the dream of getting a degree and a chance at a better life, and trusting that their college will always have their best interests at heart.Funny, passionate, and offering rare insight in the dynamics of running a small college, CAREER SCHOOL is one of the important social stories of our time.

With its publication, Colahan joins the impressive group of contemporary writers, including Philip Roth (The Human Stain), Richard Russo (Straight Man), Jane Smiley (Moo), Julie Schumacher (Dear Committee Members), and Donna Tartt (The Secret History), who have authored academic novels. Career School is set on the Philadelphia campus of Burr College, a two-year college that offers liberal arts associate degrees with a core emphasis on secretarial and office management skills so that graduates are well-prepared to assume executive assistant positions in the city’s most elite companies. When the novel opens, enrollment is down, and campus administrators are under pressure to make up for a budget shortfall. Colahan explores in depth what happens to academic quality and its proponents when, to meet enrollment goals, students gain acceptance even when they don’t meet admissions standards. Anyone working at a small college or university in today’s competitive environment will identify with the challenges that Burr faces and enjoy the deftness with which Colahan portrays the administrative clashes that result. The work combines realism with satire; it is both humorous and poignant. The novel is filled with memorable scenes that range from the college’s annual Halloween celebration early in the novel to the not-to-be missed graduation ceremony near its conclusion. Colahan is especially good in his individuation of his major characters: Oliver Dunbar, the passionate Quaker educator who directs the school; Keone Robinson, a high school dropout who views a Burr education as her last hope to escape poverty in the Philadelphia housing projects; and Lily Espirito, the admissions director who will do whatever it takes (and I do mean whatever!) to make her enrollment goals. Ultimately, it is Colahan’s ability to bring his characters to life—to make the reader care about them—that is his and the novel’s greatest strength. Kudos, Mike.

The characters are so believable, the topic so timely and the writing is so good. I cheered for Keone, empathized with Dr. Dunbar and wished Lily would gag on her coffee! This is one of those books that you don't want to put down, I know I didn't. I would highly recommend this novel. Thank you Mike Colahan for writing such an enjoyable story.

I would recommend it to people who enjoyed Gillian Flynn's "Gone Girl" or Liane Moriarty's "Big Little Lies".A friend suggested I take this book on a flight. I got into it quickly and couldn't put it down.Career School is about a group of college administrators, teachers and students at a junior college in Philadelphia. Enrollment is decreasing and the big guys in NY are complaining. So the college addresses the issue; the story traces the ups and downs, pitfalls and victories along the way. But it is really about the people. The characterizations are great and the timing perfect. Each chapter has a twist. The characterizations are well-rounded. Some of them, well, not sure I'd ever want to meet them! But very believable, very nuanced. There is plenty of humor in this book. But it also takes on big topics -- the constraints of maintaining academic standards in the real world and the role of women and minorities in business. Career School centers on a school, but the quandaries and situations have immediate application to the world as a whole. I work for a pharmaceutical company that has been taken over by a mergers-and-acquisitions outfit. And boy, some of the same stuff is going on here too!Again, I strongly recommend this for your book club. It is a quick fun read but there is plenty of meat for your discussion.
