The novel takes place on a ship where an axe murderer is on the loose and it has remnants of Agatha Christie's "And Then There Was None" It's a quick, exciting read and I highly recommend it.

Good Book, But Cheats By Deborah M Although I thoroughly enjoyed the fast pace and chilling story, I was struck by how this book completely disregards the most fundamental rule in mystery stories: giving readers enough clues (no matter how twisted or incidental) to actually solve the crime on their own. I can't say more without spoiling the end of the novel, but I think this book would have made for a more satisfying read had the author played a little more fairly with her audience. As it is, I would highly recommend this book as a good horror novel, but not as a mystery.

Excerpt from The Undying Fire: A Contemporary NovelTwo eternal beings, magnificently enhaloed, the one in a blinding excess of white radiance and the other in a bewildering extravagance of colours, converse amidst stupendous surroundings. These surroundings are by tradition palatial, but there is now also a marked cosmic tendency about them. They have no definite locality; they are above and comprehensive of the material universe. There is a quality in the scene as if a futurist with a considerable knowledge of modern chemical and physical speculation and some obscure theological animus had repainted the designs of a Pre-Raphaelite.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Undying Fire: A Contemporary Novel (Classic Reprint), by H. G. Wells

About the Author Often called the father of science fiction, British author Herbert George (H. G.) Wells literary works are notable for being some of the first titles of the science fiction genre, and include such famed titles as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man. Despite being fixedly associated with science fiction, Wells wrote extensively in other genres and on many subjects, including history, society and politics, and was heavily influenced by Darwinism. His first book, Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought, offered predictions about what technology and society would look like in the year 2000, many of which have proven accurate. Wells went on to pen over fifty novels, numerous non-fiction books, and dozens of short stories. His legacy has had an overwhelming influence on science fiction, popular culture, and even on technological and scientific innovation. Wells died in 1946 at the age of 79.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. updated Job By Bobby Newman H.G. Wells struggled with the issue of "what man can make of man" in the course of his many novels and other writings. In The Undying Fire, Wells give us an updated Book of Job, focusing on the tribulations of an actual descendant of the biblical Job. The various characters from the Biblical narrative are all there, in updated (circa World War One) form. This allows Wells the freedom to move around and speak from different perspectives and to explore the issue of humanity and its relation to the deity. This is a generally optimistic treatment, but the hints of Wells' eventual frustration are evident as well. A very well-written book.

I was going to read it for a book talk/paper thingy....but since it dwells upon relgion, and i just got a new LA teacher in the middle/near end of the school year, i went with another H.G Wells book. (this book is so captivating though, there is no way im gonna stop reading it) This means that im not finished with it...but i want to encourage anyone who stumbles across this book to pick it up. (i'll do a much better review when im done with the book, never fear) Alright, so like i said, this book is based upon religion. At first i was cautious at buying this...because it does deal with the christian god, and i myself follow no religion. And personally, i didnt want to get stuck reading a bunch of stuff that i have already deemed irrelevant and end up wasting my money. Nothing of the sorts has happened, and let me tell you why. 1) i had faith in Wells. I wouldnt call myself a huge science fiction fan and i certainly do not take to most book well. The style in which he writes is just....breath taking, i love it, if thats a strong enough word. 2) I decided to buy this book, because i do believe Wells wasnt a 100% christian. He believed in the christian god, but he had his own viewpoints, which i very much wanted to see. 3) the convos had in the story are....truly insightful. Many a times have the same thoughts run through my head, have i argued with myself, and only to return emptyhanded. No matter which side you take on the story, the arguements are supported to the fullest. Its like sitting down to a meal that feeds your eternal hunger. Not much in this world can satisfy that hunger. 4)When i started reading this, i tried to keep an open mind...just because i dont believe in a god does not mean there is nothing worthwhile in this book. If people never review their beliefs and try to understand the other viewpoint, they are just as ignorant as the next.4) alright, i know i really didnt do well in this review, but please, if the thoughts of life have ever trickled through your mind, grab this book: i can assure you that regrets you'll have none, i know i didnt. and i'll leave off with a quote (which was very hard to choose...theres so many of them....i write down page numbers as i read, just so i can go back and reread some of them...) "It is a commonplace of pietistic works that natural things are perfect things, and that the whole world of life, if it were not for the sinfulness of man, would be perfect. Paley, you will remember, Sir Eliphaz, in his 'Evidences of Christianity,' for which we have both suffered, declares that this earth is manifestly made for the happiness of the sentient beings living thereon. But i ask you to consider for a little and dispassionately, whether life through all its stages, up to and including man, is not rather a scheme of uneasiness, imperfect satisfaction, and positive miseries...." okay, heres what Job is saying right before he says that.....i like it so much, i have to add it, heh. "...I have thought of many things that men in their days of prosperity are apt to dismiss from their minds; and i am no longer sure of the goodness of the world without us or in the plan of Fate. Perhaps it is only in us, within our hearts that the light of God flickers- and flickers insecurely. here we had thought a God, somehow akin to ourselves, ruled the universe, it may be there is nothing but black emptiness and a coldness worse than cruelty."

IF you enjoyed the War of the Worlds, Time Machine or the Invisible Man, then get ready for another classic.Job suffered pain and sickness, the death of his sons and daughters, everything he had was lost. Ever try to console anyone with troubles bigger then your own ? Ever try to find the answers for lifes problems ? Ever wondered what life is about or your purpose or destiny ?God has a plan for all of us, only most don't care to hear that and choose not to believe. It is the result of our own choices and decisions that create the situations we are in. Some find out and others will resist and never find out.

67 of 69 people found the following review helpful. Emma Goldman's essays collected By Takis Tz. I've heard from many people who are interested in reading books about anarchism (allthough i think the term "anarchism" is incorrect) that most books about anarchy are "heavy" and difficult to get through much less understand because they aim their content to readers that have a good backround of political understanding (its terminologies, its "schools" of thought, its currents and so forth..).If this happens to be your problem then this book will be ideal if you want to discover what this political philosophy stands for and what its issues are and, indeed, have been for a long time.Emma Goldman, a woman with as fiery a personality as they come, has put together here a number of essays about anarchy that are easy to comprehend and definately thought inspiring. Despite this book having been first published in 1917 it loses nothing of its importance in the current state affairs as all of the issues Goldman deals with not only remain unsolved but they have -in the meantime- become a social burden or a social disaster much worse than back in her time. Oh, and back in her time things already looked bad enough. What you get here is, summarily, the following:-anarchy, what is it and what does it stand for? Beyond the mainstream media cliches anarchy stands for personal and societal freedom of the highest conceivable order. A freedom, anarchists insist, that is not a utopia. It's basically a hard lesson in crushing your illusions and opening unthought of doors of perception of what freedom really means. That would be then something other than being in a cage and having food thrown in. Even if the cage is invisible..-Hard punching essays about the prison system and the everself-destructing notion of patriotism.. Funny how every line one reads in there could've been written yesterday. Not much has changed. After decades and decades of the imprisonment system has society become more law-abiding? That would be a thundering no. Why is that? As for patriotism, the incredible notion of dying for your country the same one that might be killing you slowly while draining you of all your resources and enslaving you in a wage system and a daily mindless-toil called "work" . here, Emma has to say a lot. There's always a reason to die if someone is going to make money out of it (that would be NOT you) and dress the whole "cause" up as patriotic..-The hypocrisy of puritanism as well as the seemingly eternal joke of marriage and "love" are also given the treatment they deserve. In a society based on hypocrisy alltogether, you have to start on a personal level. You have to lose your personal chains before you attempt to free others. Your personal chains begin with the things you've been taught to hold most sacred (as is generally the case). The morals that are not yours. Whom do they really serve? The institutions that everyone notices they have fail and yet most continue to serve them. Why? How can this possibly be?These are just some of the issues dealt with in Emma's essays.A classic book that will basically reprogram your brain if you honestly think about the issues in it. But reprogrammed into what? Well, it will only reprogram you into thinking for yourself. For once. If you do, you'll find that the illusion you've been living in does indeed serve someone. Your long hard road to becoming an individual will thus commence.

Good, But Not the Best Collection of Emma's Work By Dan Clore This is a good collection of essays by Emma Goldman; however, it is not the best one available. That would be _Red Emma Speaks_, which contains the best material in this volume as well as other excellent essays and excerpts from her entire life's work. In addition, all of this book is available on the Web. So I would have to recommend that those interested in Emma's work get _Red Emma Speaks_ instead of this one.

27 of 29 people found the following review helpful. as relevent today as it was in Emma Goldman's day By egalitarian ethos Being historically one the more important yet obscure figures in American history, Emma Goldman's anarchist thought is as relevent today as it was when she wrote "Anarchism, and Other Essays". In an age where political apathy, intellectual ignorance and spiritual corruption are the failings of modern civilzation, Emma Goldman's Enlightenment thought is illuminating in its message of the power of direct action as she so lucidly illustrates:"Anarchism urges man to think, to investigate, to analyze every proposition... (Anarchism is the) philosophy of a new social order based on liberty unrestricted by man-made law; the theory that all forms of government rest on violence, and are therefore wrong and harmful, as well as unnecessary."The new social order rests, of course, on the materialistic basis of life; but while all Anarchists agree that the main evil today is an economic one, they maintain that the solution of that evil can be brought about only through the consideration of every phase of life,--individual, as well as the collective; the internal, as well as the external phases."A thorough perusal of the history of human development will disclose two elements in bitter conflict with each other; elements that are only now beginning to be understood, not as foreign to each other, but as closely related and truly harmonious, if only placed in proper environment: the individual and social instincts. The individual and society have waged a relentless and bloody battle for ages, each striving for supremacy, because each was blind to the value and importance of the other. The individual and social instincts,--the one a most potent factor for individual endeavor, for growth, aspiration, self-realization; the other an equally potent factor for mutual helpfulness and social well-being."From just that little exerpt it is easy to understand why any and all authority was terrified of Emma Goldman and why her important contributions to society have been muzzled from histories - down the "memory hole" to use an Orwellian expression.Again, "Anarchism, and Other Essays" is as relevent today as it was in Emma Goldman's day and necessary material for anyone truly interested or involved in altruistic direct action.

There are all kinds of first things one can look back upon; I mean by that the first things of all. There is the little toddling journey across the floor, with father's arms stretched out to help one, and mother's smile to greet one when the adventurous journey is over. And there are other baby things, of course. Then there come the big things which one can never forget.

Wirts Heather was a young idealist, who wants to be an illustrator, She is soon forced into reality as she finds the businesses who employ illustrators will only consider males. To survive she takes a position with a divorced newspaper owner, as a live in nanny for his two children. Her maternal instincts soon tell her that the children are under strict parental control demanding behavior normally not learned until much older. The story line in many ways parallels "The Sound of Music" . Her employer has been devastated by his first wife's abandonment of him and the children, and is resolved never to fall in love again. He is engaged to a young socialite, it will be a match of convenience for both of them. Then as the newspaperman exposes corruption through an investigative reporter, his fiancee's father is implicated. Now things start to get real interesting!

A pleasure to read, lively- GREAT for teens/young adults too By Trancelucence NOTE: the other review here is for a different book, not this one!Read this to my mom who has some dementia. It's descriptive, dramatic, yet simple enough narratively to engage and maintain her interest. I love the turn of the century prose- colorful, lively, but not as cerebral or requiring the mental gymnastics of, say, Jane Austen or Elizabeth Gaskell (both of whom I love). Simple but dramatic- comprehensible action and motives, peppered with surprises. Good pace, it flows.***SPOILER ALERT*** A spoiled, headstrong (spirited!) young girl adores her father- but perhaps he's not what she imagines. She's simultaneously wrestling with values- what kind of person will she opt to be? She has NO desire to be like other young women. This would be a GREAT book for a tween or teen girl, but it's suitable for women of all ages. We were on tenderhooks throughout to see what happened. The best part is Heather's spirit. Recommended!
