The Executioner’s Race... A female calligrapher in Ottoman Istanbul is condemned to death and imprisoned for turning holy prayers into faces and animals, for “reassembling the word of God.” Her only chance at life—a privilege rarely granted to a woman—is to win a race against a bostanci, one of the Sultan’s guards and executioners. Seven years later, in 1841, a man named Andersen travels to Istanbul and learns of the calligrapher Zeynep from a Turkish florist. Andersen, who is to become a great name in nineteenth century literature, sets out to tell the tale of the calligrapher and uncover the outcome of her story. What happened to Zeynep, and is the florist telling him everything he knows? The Executioner’s Race is a cleverly wrought and intriguing puzzle of a tale.

Mr. Bynom took me on a journey to 19th century Istanbul, where I -- like Hans Christian Andersen, who is a key character in the book book -- was an observer of a land of which I previously knew embarrassing little about. "The Executioner's Race" is the story of a female calligrapher who is sentenced to death for “reassembling the word of God."If you like stories that take you to new lands, and if you like tales that are revealed with lovely patience, you'll love Mr. Bynom's book. His descriptions are exquisite, bringing vivid images of tulips and temple interiors and Arabic script to life. I always love stories that teach me about work, and I enjoyed learning about gardening, the history of tulips in Turkey, and the painstaking craft of calligraphy, especially when that craft is imbued with "baraka", or spiritual force.Along the way, I learned that not all dervishes are whirling; some of them are more like roving therapists for the depressed and those who've lost their way. Bynom's dervishes, who come in green, blue, and so we are led to believe, red, are a generous lot, kind enough to spare the inside of a cannon to a weary traveler.Having just read the last page and closed the book, I'm just beginning to rehash and relish the details, and, as I should when at the mercy of a fine storyteller, trying to reconcile fact, fiction, and wonder.Buy the book. The Man in a Hurry (Pushkin Collection), by Paul Morand

Review "Pushkin Press’s gorgeous new edition of Morand’s masterpiece, written in 1941, is a shockingly clever farce. . . This is a strange book, written in prose as speedy as its impossible hero, and Morand deserves to be widely revisited both for the ageless appeal of his style and the specific (sometimes worrying) portrait of human nature at war with 1940s modernity." — Publishers Weekly"Admired both by Ezra Pound and by Marcel Proust as a pioneer craftsman of Modernist French prose... The sheer shapeliness of his prose recalls Hemingway; the urbanity of his self-destructiveness compares with Fitzgerald's; and his camera eye is as lucidly stroboscopic as that of Dos Passos." - The New York Times"The translation's prose is refined and worldly, the atmosphere European, the overall effect that of a jeu d'esprit. . . The four women's curious behavior recalls moments in Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast novels and Eugenides' Virgin Suicides." - Kirkus Reviews "Morand was the all-round aesthete." - Nicholas Lezard, Guardian"Morand was a citizen of the world, with a sharp eye and a neat turn of phrase." - Tablet"Without a doubt the best French writer of the twentieth century." - Philippe Sollers

About the Author Paul Morand (1888-1976) was born in Paris and, after studying at the École des Sciences Politiques, joined the diplomatic corps, serving in London, Rome, Berne and Bucharest. In a long and busy life, he found time to write poetry, novels, short stories and travel books. Married to a Romanian Princess, he was made a member of the Académie Française in 1968.

I never really got into the main character. He just basically made me tired and bored.I thought after his marriage he had slowed down and that he had become normal, but then it wasn't long and he was back to his original ways. I didn't like the ending, but what else in his condition could he have done? He did the right thing.I would like to to thank Pushkin Press and Net Galley for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this e-galley in exchange for an honest review. I would recommend this book, I think there are people out there who would get into this book a little better than I did.

For fans of Alice Munro and Lorrie Moore.

A young girl, renamed Amerika in honor of the United States' role in the liberation of Kuwait, finds her name has become a barometer of her country’s growing hostility toward the West. A middle-aged man dying from cancer looks back on his extramarital affairs and the abiding forgiveness of his wife.

The headlines tell of war, unrest, and religious clashes. But if you look beyond, you will see life in the Middle East as it is really lived--adolescent love, the fragility of marriage, pain of the most quotidian kind. Mai Al-Nakib’s luminous stories unveil the lives of ordinary people--and the power of objects to hold extraordinary memories.

The Hidden Light of Objects, by Mai Al-Nakib

Review

"The old world and the new. The strife in the Gulf, once peaceful and reflective. East and West, Arabic and English, the poetry of the heart, the eye of the hawk; all these elements produce the lustrous pearls of Mai Al-Nakib’s short stories." ―Hanan al-Shaykh, author of Beirut Blues

"Through a richly nuanced and generous lens, Al-Nakib’s gracefully intertwined stories celebrate the living desire that connects us to home--wherever in the world that might be--as well as to the past and to each other. A powerful voice already in full mastery of her powers. The most original first collection of short fiction I have read in years." ―A. Manette Ansay, author of Vinegar Hill

"These moments examined, small and beautiful and finely drawn, evoke a world of loss, of longing, and remembrance. Mai Al-Nakib’s debut collection, The Hidden Light of Objects, reveals the life before and after, old and new, innocent and wise . . . Beautiful." ―M. Evelina Galang, author of Angel de la Luna and The Fifth Glorious Mystery

"Mai Al-Nakib's The Hidden Light of Objects brings forth both the light and the shadows of the contemporary Middle East in clean-edged prose that startles us, not with sudden violence or polemic, but with the ineluctable force of human desire. Kuwait itself becomes a character, full of contradictions, in this multifaceted set of stories and vignettes. Superb." ―Lucy Ferriss, author of The Lost Daughter and A Sister to Honor

"With her compassion for an old, vanished world and her exceptional eye for the bruised landscape of the modern Middle East, Al-Nakib should be heralded as an exciting new literary voice." ―The National

"A collection of stories set mainly in the Middle East and centered on the themes of memory and longing . . . In the midst of tragedy, memory offers the characters escape. Objects, whether stumbled upon or carefully guarded, are the keys that allow them to unlock doors into their own glittering pasts." ―Annie Atherton, Shelf Awareness

About the Author Mai Al-Nakib was born in Kuwait in 1970. She holds a Ph.D. in English literature from Brown University and teaches postcolonial studies and comparative literature at Kuwait University. The Hidden Light of Objects is her first collection of short stories. She lives in Kuwait and is currently writing her first novel.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Fragile memories, carefully wrapped in purple tissue paper By Noha Al-Awadi We all have our own objects. Our own memories. Some we try to hide, and others we often remove from their boxes and we unwrap, to hold and to touch. These objects, their multiple meanings and their insurmountable value, are the essence behind Al-Nakib’s collection of stories. This collection of perfectly crafted short stories was emotionally difficult for me to read, mainly due to the recurring theme of family bonds and the effects of the loss of the mother figure on those families. With most of the stories based in Kuwait, Al-Nakib highlights memories of a childhood that was practically perfect. Yet this reality is shaken, both by war and life, which just 'happens'.Illness, and inevitably death, are prominent in this selection of short stories, which are each introduced by a vignette, linking all the stories somehow into a perfectly woven tapestry of memories. For anyone who has suffered the illness, or loss, of a mother, these short stories will be especially poignant. Nothing can assuage the pain of a mother lost. The image of birds is also prominent throughout the selection of short stories, and each time a bird would emerge on one of the pages, it would bring me a sense of hope and joy. Al-Nakib has a way of forcing hope on the reader in that way, while juxtaposing what was perfect in the past, with what is so difficult in the very real present, a glimmer of hope always permeates through the lines.Often gripping with nostalgia, at other times, humorous and sometimes painfully devastating to read. Yet Al-Nakib writes with such ease and fluidity, and her sentences are incredibly complex and packed with meaning. Her writing encourages readers to slow down, to indulge in every word, in every emotion, and to re-read each line. Her words become objects and the light reflects differently with each reading.A beautiful collection of memories, perfectly wrapped in purple tissue paper.

Mai al-Nakib's stories have opened up a world to me of which I knew very little, and yet a common human thread runs through them, which allows me to identify with, say, a group of teenagers, in one instance, or with the eternal, universal circumstances and complications of women and wives, in another. I look forward to her forthcoming novel.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Small stories, huge impact By Charmaine I have always known very little of the unrest in the Middle East, and I went into "The Hidden Light of Objects" seeking entertainment and a "pretty" read (Just look at that gorgeous cover! And how deep can a book of short stories really go?). I feel silly thinking about my initial expectations now, because I was blown away by the poignancy and magnitude of this collection. The themes of sadness and loss are contrasted with hope and beauty in each story. The beautiful portrait drawn of Kuwait through the everyday lives of its people is purposefully splattered with expected (but no less devastating) losses as life moves forward and then tragically shredded by the effects of war on the people ensnared in it.I often found myself reading, re-reading, and reading again several passages: once to understand them, again to visualize them, and finally to feel them. The book’s complexity requires it, its lyrical richness implores it, and its emotional depth demands it.“The Hidden Light of Objects” is to be treasured, shared, and remembered. Its significance is found both within its pages and in the feelings that remain long after the last page turns. In a word, this book is important.Note: I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Ernest William Hornung (7 June 1866 – 22 March 1921) was an English author and poet known for writing the A. J. Raffles series of stories about a gentleman thief in late 19th-century London. Hornung was educated at Uppingham School; as a result of poor health he left the school in December 1883 to travel to Sydney, where he stayed for two years. He drew on his Australian experiences as a background when he began writing, initially short stories and later novels. Hornung’s prose is widely admired for its lucid-yet-simple style. Oliver Edwards, writing in The Times, considered that ”not the least attractive part of the Raffles books is the simple, plain, unaffected language in which each one of them is written”. The obituarist in the same newspaper agrees, and thinks Hornung had ”a power of good and clear description and a talent for mystery and surprise”. Colin Watson also considers the point, and observes that in Hornung’s writing, ”superfluous description has been avoided and account of action is to the point”, while Doyle admired his ”sudden use of the right adjective and the right phrase”, something the writer and journalist Jeremy Lewis sees as a ”flamboyant, Kiplingesque taste for the vivid”.

  • Milt Dale, man of the forest, halted at the edge of a timbered ridge, to listen and to watch. Beneath him lay a narrow valley, open and grassy, from which rose a faint murmur of running water. Its music was pierced by the wild staccato yelp of a hunting coyote. From overhead in the giant fir came a twittering and rustling of grouse settling for the night; and from across the valley drifted the last low calls of wild turkeys going to roost. To Dale's keen ear these sounds were all they should have been, betokening an unchanged serenity of forestland. He was glad, for he had expected to hear the clipclop of white men's horses—which to hear up in those fastnesses was hateful to him. He and the Indian were friends. That fierce foe had no enmity toward the lone hunter. But there hid somewhere in the forest a gang of bad men, sheep-thieves, whom Dale did not want to meet.

Review "No man has employed the Western story formula with better results.""--The New York Times ""A story full of the thrills and charms familiar to the readers of Zane Grey.""--ALA Booklist ""[Grey is] well up to his mark in this stirring tale.""--The Times Literary Supplement ""Fireworks in fiction!""--The New York World"

About the Author American author (Pearl Zane Grey) is best known as a pioneer of the Western literary genre, which idealized the Western frontier and the men and women who settled the region. Following in his father s footsteps, Grey studied dentistry while on a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. Grey s athletic talent led to a short career in the American minor league before he established his dentistry practice. As an outlet to the tedium of dentistry, Grey turned to writing, and finally abandoned his dental practice to write full time. Over the course of his career Grey penned more than ninety books, including the best-selling Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of Grey s novels were adapted for film and television. He died in 1939.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. my favourite zane grey book By montana I have read this book the first time as a teenager and have re-read it many times since then. I love the descriptions of the nature, the mountains, the desert, the horses etc.. I also found the story very captivating. the book came out later as "duane of the mountains" with basically just the name of Milt Dale changed. Milt, the male hero of the book, is not a gun-slinging cowboy, but a man who loves the solitude of the mountains, a life in the woods, shared only with his pets, a tame mountain lion and various other animals. When he meets Helen Rayner and her sister Bo, his whole life changes, and it takes him a while to understand what is going on in himself. I will certainly read it again, and I can recommend it to anybody who does not look for a western full of brutality. (well, there is some shooting and some people are killed, but it is described in a non-drastic way and it is just a necessary part of the story).

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A classic western with modern appeal By King George I have only just started to read Zane Grey novels and I am very excited that I discovered this author. I live in Arizona and have explored many of the settings for his stories and with his detailed descriptions I can easily imagine that I am back in these scenes. In The Man of the Forest he has character development. He has many different characters in this story from the mountain man to the Eastern heiress and her little sister to the Morman cowboys to the Mexican shepherds and sleazy villains. And, his descriptions and development do not end at landscapes and characters but to action as well. It just takes your breath away when the heiress is being chased through the high desert and forest for 3 days in a stage coach and then on horse back. Also, the most amazing description that I can recall ever reading was the grizzly bear hunt. Both of these are "hair raising" darn right adventure. I truly believe that these novels should be resurrected and marketed for today's audience, but I also think that TV westerns like Bonanza and Gunsmoke should return as well. This novel is considered Zane Grey's fifth best novel of the over 55 novels he wrote by the Zane Grey's West Society and was written about 10 years into his career as a writer. I am looking forward to reading first through fourth.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Holds up over time! By voracious reader I first read this book when I was 12, and absolutely loved it. I was already a horse-riding maniac and adored the physical description of the West as Grey knew it. I thought the love story was also wonderful, there was suspense, and Grey, to me, was an amazing storyteller. I proceeded to read every one of his books, at the rate of about 2 per week. I have since re-read several of my faves, and decades later, this still ranks as one of the best. Unlike the other readers, I highly recommend it for a drowsy Saturday. And I love the price! Free, for my Kindle!

Funny and Frightening By VampireAdmirer You see a lot of films and television shows about zombies, but none of them do what this author does with the genre. For once, we get inside the head of the zombie and experience the hunger and confusion of the monsters with often-hilarious results. But never fear horror fans, the gore factor in this book is high and the fast-paced story is packed with thrills that don't let up, even to the very end. If you like a healthy dose of humor with your horror, check out this book.

It delivers characters that are captivating and quirky. The zombie angle unfolds in a realistic manner that is both fantastic and frightening at the same time. It moves fast, holding the reader like a good book should, but it remains slow enough to leave you with a real sense of the world and people, and with a hunger for more blood =)If zombies are your thing then you must add this one to your collection, and if instead you consider yourself a more rounded reader, then add this to your collection as well because Gary can tell a story. I hope we'll see more great things from this writer soon.I give this a five star because of the story idea and telling, the portrayal of wonderful character and setting, for the realism in a fantasy story, and because I just darn liked it. And, I know you will too.

Only a storyteller as preternaturally gifted as action-adventure master H. Rider Haggard could turn a story about a legal battle over publishing rights into a gripping page-turner. Mr. Meeson's Will offers a fascinating glimpse into the legal rights of authors in the nineteenth century -- and a swashbuckling maritime misadventure that comes with a plethora of unpredictable consequences.

A LESSER BUT STILL MIGHTY FUN HAGGARD By s.ferber "Mr. Meeson's Will" was first printed in book form in October 1888, after having first appeared earlier that year in "The Illustrated London News." It was H. Rider Haggard's 11th novel (out of 58), and one in which his experiences as both a writer and aspiring lawyer were given vent. The novel is at once a tale of adventure, a critique of the publishing industry in late 19th century England, and a satire on the English legal system. In the book's first half, Augusta Smithers--our heroine and a successful author, who has unwittingly entered into an unfair contract with Meeson's publishing firm--takes passage on board a steamship bound for New Zealand, where she hopes to make a fresh start. Her enemy, Mr. Meeson himself, is on board the same boat, coincidentally, and when the ship sinks after a catastrophic collision with a whaler (in a disaster scene that predates a similar, fictional shipwreck in Haggard's 1905 novel, "The Spirit of Bambatse," not to mention the real-life Titanic disaster of 1912), Augusta, Meeson and several others are washed up on one of the lonely Kerguelen Islands, in the south Indian Ocean. Before his death, Meeson decides to alter his will and, having no other means of doing so, has that testament tattooed upon Augusta's back! This sets up the story for the book's second half, in which a huge court battle takes place regarding the validity of this document. What might have turned out to be a dry exposition of legal procedures in another author's hands is handled quite entertainingly by H. Rider, and the result is a book of adventure in the first half--the shipwreck and marooning scenes are especially fun--and interesting court battles in the second. Haggard must have greatly enjoyed exposing the unfair practices of the publishing system that had tried to cheat him during his early career, much as Meeson & Co. had cheated Augusta. The book, though a lesser title in Haggard's bibliography--and probably a seldom-read one today, at least as compared to such other Haggard titles as "King Solomon's Mines" and "She"--offers ample entertainment value for the modern-day reader, and I do unreservedly recommend it. This book was, by the way, made into a film starring Lon Chaney in 1916, and called "The Grasp of Greed." If it's half as good as its source novel, I would love to see it one day.

Fabulous Story; Shoddy Edition By littleholzer, PhD Sadly, the inordinate amount of typos in the Betancourt/Wildside edition of Haggard's obscure novel make the reading experience nearly unbearable (and I do not mean to indicate the obsolete grammar and punctuation of nineteenth century written English or Haggard's rough renderings of lower class English dialects). The only reason I am suffering through it is because I am writing a dissertation chapter on the text. I have some access to a first edition in my university library's Special Collections, so I know for a fact that the numerous mistakes, misspellings, and inconsistencies do not exist in the original illustrated book (circa 1888). (The Wildside edition also, sadly, excludes these illustrations, which truly were something!) While I remain sympathetic and supportive of the avowed mission of Wildside Press to bring "lost Haggard books back into print," I venture to state that Betancourt could and probably should have employed a careful copy editor to perform a thorough proofreading! Some of the more frustrating examples from the 2001 Betancourt edition:1. "It was on a Tuesday evening that a mightly steamed majestically out of the mouth of the Thames" (40)2. "In a very few seconds it was dune" (60)3. "Eustace stared at the broad fine of letters, which, with the signatures written underneath, might mean [...]" (116)4. "the infant form the City" (176)5. "Notice of appeal, I except" (176) [I think it was supposed to be "I expect"!]6. Finally, in the editor's Introduction to the text, Haggard's most well known character Allan Quatermain's name is misspelled twice, as Quaterman.

Beautiful authoress Augusta Smithers flees to New Zealand, and her fellow traveller is the selfish publisher Meeson whose refusal to pay her a fair price for her best-seller she blames for her invalid sister's death. But when they are shipwrecked and the dying Meeson wants to leave his fortune to Eustace, the nephew he disinherited for her sake, Augusta bears having it tattooed onto her skin and after being rescued, she returns to England so Eustace can claim his inheritance.Although I can't point to any particular flaws, I never got involved in the story. The characters are fairly one-note but not obnoxiously so, and the story moved along as well as anything written around 1888. But it never held my interest; I got halfway through and then skipped to the end.
