Ernest William Hornung (7 June 1866 – 22 March 1921) was an English author and poet known for writing the A. J. Raffles series of stories about a gentleman thief in late 19th-century London. Hornung was educated at Uppingham School; as a result of poor health he left the school in December 1883 to travel to Sydney, where he stayed for two years. He drew on his Australian experiences as a background when he began writing, initially short stories and later novels. Hornung’s prose is widely admired for its lucid-yet-simple style. Oliver Edwards, writing in The Times, considered that ”not the least attractive part of the Raffles books is the simple, plain, unaffected language in which each one of them is written”. The obituarist in the same newspaper agrees, and thinks Hornung had ”a power of good and clear description and a talent for mystery and surprise”. Colin Watson also considers the point, and observes that in Hornung’s writing, ”superfluous description has been avoided and account of action is to the point”, while Doyle admired his ”sudden use of the right adjective and the right phrase”, something the writer and journalist Jeremy Lewis sees as a ”flamboyant, Kiplingesque taste for the vivid”.

The Crime Doctor, by E. W. Hornung

Review Mr. Hornung's new hero is not a committer but a preventer of crime, one whose mission to quote his own words, is to busy himself "in saving people from themselves while they're still worth saving, in that prevention which is not only better than cure, but the vital principle of modern therapeutics in every other direction. In keeping good material out of the prison at all cost." Even, when such action implies becoming more or less an accessory after the fact. This idea of "The Crime Doctor" is an excellent one on which to base a series of stories, and Mr. Hornung uses it skillfully. Doctor Dollar has been led by a startling personal experience to interest himself, first in the possible results of surgical operations upon character, and then in the employment of other means to obviate a potential from becoming an actual criminal. His work in this new branch of the profession is aided by all sorts of sanatorium he runs for the benefit of his especial type of patients, to whom he is both physician and father confessor, many of them being quite unaware that they are being treated for "incipient criminality." Naturally a young man in this position is bound to have adventures, particularly when one of his friends and supporters is so important a personage as the Home Secretary of England, his first encounter with whom provides the book's opening episode. Doctor Dollar frequently finds it necessary to play the part of detective in addition to his other two roles, and does it very successfully. Sometimes, in fact, he is rather more detective than physician, as in the affair of "The Golden Key," and had he not been both the matter of "The Schoolmaster Abroad," would have ended disastrously and he himself failed to pay his debt. He is all these and lover to boot in certain of those cases in which the Lady Vera Molye, the book's frank and spirited heroine, is the central figure. And once or twice he actually does become an accessory after the fact, though surely no one could help sympathizing with his decision in the matter of "One Possessed" and his treatment of "The Second Murderer" ---- whose nerves he wrecks in a way the description of which is one of the most interesting things in the book. He is a agreeable and appealing hero, this "Crime Doctor" with the slight squint and the patch of silver hair above one ear, quick-witted, enthusiastic, a man for whom loaded pistols have no terrors--- does he not walk right up to one in the very beginning and collects a number of them before the end?--- and we suspect that his creator is fond of him and does not intend to let his adventures close with this single volume. Else why is the arch villain of them all, the educated and intelligent criminal contemptuous of "battle, murder and sudden death," more to be feared than a dozen of the merely ignorant and vicious, still at liberty upon the very last page? It has been said that throughout his subsequent life Sheridan was afraid of the author of "The School for Scandal"; and it is probable that Mr. Hornung is in somewhat the same position. With each new book of his comes the chorus, "It's good, but it isn't `Raffles'!" Whether this new hero will prove as popular as that debonair thief only time will tell, but in either case he can congratulate himself upon the fact that Doctor Dollar may very likely bring certain aspects of crime to the attention of people who but for him might never have thought of them. So "The Crime Doctor" has a value outside the fulfillment of its ostensible purpose of providing lively entertainment well suited either to the Summer hammock or the Winter easy chair. -- The New York TimesAn excellent addition to any classical detective library...The eight stories contained inThe Crime Doctor are examples of Edwardian crime fiction at its best. Intellect prevails over chaos, and scientific progress can solve all social ills.... This is an attractive volume from a new small press, and a welcome reprint of this lesser-known classic... -- Steven Steinbock, The Strand Magazine

Under British colonial rule, Queen Victoria's armies occupied twenty-five percent of the nations of this planet, implementing parliamentary law and English culture across the globe. No other fictional character bolstered the perception of Anglo-supremacy and Christian virtue than Sherlock Holmes, the UK's foremost consulting detective. But in the early 1900s, the English empire started to crumble. Their involvement in the Boer wars, a difficult and bloody campaign that saw the conception of concentration camps for women and children, had the British citizenry equally divided between support and protest. Out of this moral ambiguity and social turmoil comes EW Hornung's Crime Doctor, a man who himself crippled in that horrific campaign. He is not portrayed as a superman who needs the intellectual challenge of pursuing criminals to sway his boredom, but as an all too human solider, who after being cured of his injury that caused a personality imbalance, has a deep seeded desire to help his fellow man by the eradication of crime, by using any means at his disposal. It would be unfair for me to list any highlights of his adventures since they follow a chronological order and I wouldn't want to rob you of any enjoyment by inadvertently giving away any plot points. But I will say that reading THE CRIME DOCTOR is time well spent.

More than just a great detective By Bill7704 THE CRIME DOCTOR wonderfully captures the time when England's gaslights dimmed in favor of the flicker of the new electric light and her place as a superpower began to slowly corrode. Out of this transitory period emerges E. W. Hornrung's Crime Doctor. After surviving a grievous head wound attained during the folly of the Boer War, a brutal campaign in which atrocities where committed by the English against Boer civilians, John Dollar lays down his rifle to pursue the noble calling of medicine. He establishes an exclusive practice, one that only caters to the criminal classes. It is his belief that most criminals are unbalanced individuals and given the proper treatments can be cure of their compulsions. Of course, there are a few setbacks... deadly setbacks. And these failures serve as the motivation for Dr. Dollar to take a more hostile approach to the business of crime. After reading this absorbing collection, I guarantee you will be wanting more.

By Steve As THE CRIME DOCTOR, Doctor John Dollar is an an amalgam of intelligence, cunning, strength, and courage. He is a man who has faced the horror of war and emerged as tempered steel, bringing with him his very unique perspective of the world, the criminal mind - and how to do battle with those of evil intent.John Dollar, the literary creation of EW Hornung (brother-in-law to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and creator of Raffles - the Gentleman Thief), stands out as a detective that deserves his place among the great sleuths of popular fiction. After reading this book, readers will be left to solve one final mystery- why this collection of fine mystery stories never reached the popularity of Raffles...

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Restoration Drama By Bruce Kendall The period of English theater that coincided with the restoration of the crown is best known for comedy. This is with good reason. The comedies of Wycherly, Congreve, Etherege, Davenant, etc. still retain their satirical bite and energy, whereas the drama of the period, especially the attempts at tragedy, appear now dated and lugubrious. Otway, like Dryden, is something of an exception. Though not adhering to the Aristotean rules of tragedy that Dryden practiced, Otway shows in Venice Preserved a great deal of dramatic skill and competence. The plot elements may seem a bit contrived, particularly in comparison to the Greek model, but the dialogue doesn't sink into the sort of heroic, declamatory mode that characterizes so many plays of the period and that sound so laughable to a modern audience. The play was well received in its time, as was his other famous work, The Orphan. Unfortunately for Otway, playwights were not often well compensated in that era, and he like Savage, lived a life of penury. Venice Preserved is still well regarded enough that it is still taught in many college courses that cover Restoratiion theater. Though modern productions are extremely rare, is is a work that retains power and its pathos.

The road from Wellmouth Centre to East Wellmouth is not a good one; even in dry weather and daylight it is not that. For the first two miles it winds and twists its sandy way over bare hills, with cranberry swamps and marshy ponds in the hollows between. Then it enters upon a three-mile stretch bordered with scrubby pines and bayberry thickets, climbing at last a final hill to emerge upon the bluff with the ocean at its foot. And, fringing that bluff and clustering thickest in the lowlands just beyond, is the village of East Wellmouth, which must on no account be confused with South Wellmouth, or North Wellmouth, or West Wellmouth, or even Wellmouth Port.

Lincoln novel -- the plot doesn't really matter too much, although a couple of twists are surprising (and amusing). The real fun in these stories is meeting these low-pitch down-east characters on their home ground.Incidentally, if I had to choose a favorite among Lincoln's books, I think it would be the Rise of Roscoe Paine.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another good read. By Paul K. I agree with the earlier reviews entirely. It seemed to have a few more plot twists than some of his other books, and it resolved them all before it was done. All I can add -without giving away any of the plot details- is that this might be best read during the month of December.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not recommended - unclear instructions By Sarah As someone who is experienced in the art of crochet, I do not like this book. I found it entirely too wordy for me. Unlike the other reviews, I found that the beginner instructions to be lacking in pictures and not very clear. I also was very confused by the way they said to count the stitches in single crochet. In my almost 20 years of crocheting, I have never seen the turning chain of a single crochet row count as a stitch.Corner to corner crochet is a new technique for me. I was excited to learn a new skill. However, I found some of the instructions lacking in detail. How many stitches should I have at the end of the row? It wasn't listed. Also am I supposed to turn before starting the next chain? Again it didn't say either way. I was finding myself having to refer to my experience crocheting and deciphering the pictures.A chart would have been nice as well.I will not be recommending this book to anyone else.

238 of 244 people found the following review helpful. A towering achievement of English literature By Catherine S. Vodrey This has to be my favorite of all Thomas Hardy's many classic works. "Far from the Madding Crowd" was published in 1874 when the novelist was 34 years old. It is one of the earliest works of English literature I can think of which has a fully rounded, fully independent, fully human female protagonist. Bathsheba Everdene runs a farm, is only semi-aware of her own extraordinary beauty, and is pursued by three very different men throughout the course of the book."Far from the Madding Crowd" may, in some sense, be the model for every cheapo drugstore romance novel ever written, but it is a classic for the very simple and very good reason that it transcends the genre it may have helped to start. Bathsheba's trials, in love and elsewhere, are completely realized, with terrific detail. Hardy has a powerful understanding of human nature and makes each of the characters both deep and broad, both simple and complex, both good and filled with fault. The result is a story with many characters, each of whom is as full-blooded and human as a reader could hope. It's a book which bears reading again and again, as each new reading shows the reader new detail and new depth not previously seen. A more three-dimensional character study may not exist in novel form--and the beauty of it is that all this terrific character examination is done against the backdrop of a wonderful plot as well. You really couldn't ask for a more richly satisfying novel.

Few literary settings are more distinctive than Thomas Hardy's Wessex, a hilly, chalky, bucolic quilt of pastures and villages occupying the southwest of England, its residents sworn to the immutable cultural traditions of centuries long past. But it is not the goal of "Far from the Madding Crowd" to be merely a sentimental portrait of a region for which Hardy has a great affection, but a grandiose drama about the eventual union of a man and the woman he loves. In summary, Hardy does accede to a Happily Ever After ending, but how he gets to this point is why his novel deserves to be read. It's not surprising that the novel was originally attributed to George Eliot because the protagonist, Gabriel Oak, as the novel's moral anchor, is very similar in character to Eliot's Adam Bede. Oak is trying to make a living on his own as a farmer, but a stroke of bad luck compels him to take a job as a shepherd for a beautiful young woman named Bathsheba Everdene who has recently inherited her uncle's farm and commands a large number of workers and servants. Oak iconically personifies the rustic setting, not only because of his surname but because of the intimacy with which he communes with nature, and his fondness for playing the flute seems designed to evoke an image of Pan.Oak has an awkward history with Bathsheba -- he had known her before her windfall, but in her independent spirit she spurned his love. As the head of Weatherbury farm, however, she can't get by on her independence alone, and she needs Oak's expertise in ensuring her sheep are healthy and fit for wool production. Her romantic attention turns toward a profligate soldier named Francis Troy who, through an unlikely error, has just barely avoided wedding Fanny Robin, one of the Weatherbury servants. Bathsheba's eventual marriage to Troy breaks the hearts of Oak and another rival, a neighboring farmer named Boldwood whose affections she had once teased and whose obsessive nature erupts at a most climactic moment in the novel. The plot developments are a flamboyant display of contrivance, but Hardy masters his devices so well it's impossible not to go along with him for the ride. As an example, consider the jilted Fanny who is so weary from sickness that she has to use a dog as a crutch to get to her destination where she finally dies; not until Hardy reveals what's written on the lid of her coffin do we (and Oak) realize the role Troy played in her death. Likewise, Troy's impulsive reaction to this incident seems like a purposely destructive measure that intends to stir even more turbulence into the story.A large part of Hardy's appeal is his prose, which maximizes the value of a mastery of language; his sentences are like finely cut gems that demand to be held up to a light and studied for their craftsmanship. I believe that Hardy is the consummate novelist; he approaches the art of the novel as a painter looks upon a canvas, a weaver upon a tapestry, a composer upon an opera -- as the supreme representation of man in harmony with nature and in conflict with fate.

In Far from the Madding Crowd, Thomas Hardy introduces us to the precarious "love square".At the core of all the turmoil is beautiful farm girl, Bathsheba Everdene - spirited, vain, intelligent and adept at toying with the hearts of men. Inevitably beguiled by her charms a humble and kind farmer, Gabriel Oak, fervently attempts to win Bathsheba's affections. Enter the competition....(suitor#2) Farmer Boldwood - a wealthy and temperate middle-aged man respected in the community, eventually plunges into maniacal obsession at the mere possibility of making the beloved Miss Everdene his wife; and (suitor#3) Sergeant Francis Troy - a dashing young philandering soldier, with his share of inner demons, ruthlessness and vanity, vies for Bathsheba's hand in marriage.Bathsheba's ultimate decision, and the cataclysm it evokes, lies at the epicenter of Hardy's unforgettable ambivalent story."Far from the Madding Crowd", Thomas Hardy's fourth novel, saw publication in 1874 and earned him widespread popularity as a writer. A delicately woven tale of unrequited love and regret, set in the mid-19th century, "Far From the Madding Crowd" is a masterpiece of pure story-telling.Hardy's classic style is a pleasure to read as he masterfully brings his characters and their dealings to life. I would not hesitate to say it definitely captured my heart as another favourite.
