Loved it. as I have all of George MacDonald's books i've read. they change the way you live and view life...in a powerfully good way.

13 of 17 people found the following review helpful. A Classic By karycter A bit cheesy, but not as much as Jayne Eyre. MacDonald tends to be a bit formulaic in some of his books, and this one is the epitome of that formula. And possibly the apex. If you only read one book by old Georgie, this would be the one. It will warm your heart if you let it. A rugged old Scottish Cinderella story. As a side note, MacDonald was a Christian and the influence is seen. This is the man who inspired CS Lewis in writing.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. wonderful book By Maggie Jarpey If you like MacDonald (not the modernized ones by Phillips), you'll love Malcolm and the sequel, Marquis of Lossie. Wonderfully entertaining, satisfying, edifying. Great plot, as always. Most important, you'll love the characters of Malcolm, primarily, and some others as well. Lots of Scots dialect, so you'd better be used to that, or it could ruin the experience for you. I got used to it from other original MacDonald books, and now I would miss it if it were changed to English. It's worth getting used to. The modernized versions of MacDonald are so different from the real thing!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Chilling Story of a God's Obsessive Desire for Worship By Elflover For those who enjoy Greek tragedy, Euripides' classic continues the tradition of gods doing disgusting things when they aren't given "godly" respect. Those who don't enjoy Greek tragedy will find the Chorus's musings annoying, boring and excessively long, but if you can get through it, you'll get an overall picture that's both fascinating and disturbing.Warning: spoilers to come: In Euripides' The Bacchae, we see in gods all of the worst emotions that humans possess, but with powers that allow them to carry these emotions to excess. This story exemplifies the gods' petty, spiteful, and cruel natures, without any sense of morality that defines what we think of as a godly, perfect being. Any offense can be justified. The worst part is that they force humans to take part in their guilt, to lifelong detriment. Dionysus blinds Agaue and forces her to kill her own son. He shields from her the knowledge of her act until after it is done. Yet even this is not enough revenge for him, since he then banishes and separates her from her parents. (Last scene) Euripides does not judge Dionysus' actions; rather, he explains them in a rather detached way. The Chorus, who at first assures its audience that to obey laws and live moderately is wise, (first scene) then takes a different tack. In the proverb of Plato (third ode), the Chorus seems to throw away its first advice and tells the audience that personal advantage and revenge are justified. Dionysus epitomizes the fact that when a human does wrong, gods punish them, but there is no corresponding wrong for gods. Gods can lie, as when Dionysus deceives Pentheus and tricks him into taking women's garb. Gods are very good at lying, murder, and corruption, yet they must be treated as good and beautiful no matter how monstrous their deeds. This fact is verified in many other myths, such as when Athena blames Medusa for being raped by Poseidon (many later writers "cleaned up" that tale, but in the original, it was anything but a love story). It does not matter if one is a victim; if the gods want revenge, they take it. The relationship between humans and gods, therefore, is one that disadvantages humans. They must respect, admire, worship, make sacrifices, and treat the gods as if they are perfect, even though, in fact, they are quite the opposite. If humans do not worship them, gods will demonstrate just how little they deserve worship. The only way for humans to survive, therefore, is to close their minds to the horror of which gods are capable, and continue to stroke their egos. If humans do this, then it is possible to gain favored status with the gods. In other words, you must become as deceitful as the gods in order to survive their idiosyncrasies. This is the lesson in most of the Greek tragedies, and especially in The Bacchae.

Rearick III A profoundly disturbing Greek drama that warns of the dangers of holding human intellect above the divine. It can also be read as the division between rational world view against the archetypal instinctual essence of the human heart.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Stevenson's amusing farce By Michael G. Moran Burton Egbert Stevenson had written two detective novels when he published Affairs of State, a short farce set in Holland. Much of the book reads like a stage play rather than a novel, and has the feel of an Oscar Wilde play like The Importance of Being Ernest. The premise is that the American investor Archibald Rushford takes his two daughters abroad where all three get caught up in a dipolmatic snarl between various European countries. Stevenson offers some telling comments on the differences between American and European values, with the American ones being held up as superior. The two daughters, Sue and Nell, enter romances with a young European prince and a young British diplomat, making the title a pun on diplomatic and romantic affairs. There are the usual mistaken identifies and misunderstanding the cause the relationships of founder temporarily. The novel is an airy piece that offers a pleasant afternoon of reading. The novel is published by Dodo Press that does a good job making out-of-print books available to contemporary readers. Some of these editions are very good, but this one is filled with distracting printing errors. Most of these are errors of spacing. Quotation marks are often given an extra space and sometimes even appear at the beginning of the next line. These errors make the books practically useless for scholars. I hope the editors at Dodo will in the future take more care in the details of their books.Michael G. Moran

Terrific, simple story-telling with a fresh new voice. Fan Flaherty's tale of the gypsy mare Roma and the many people she encounters tugs at the heart strings while never straying into sentimentality. The nobility and stoicism of the horse and the resilience of the human spirit are all celebrated here. Loved this book, think you will too. But have a hankie ready...

Don't miss this opportunity to sink yourself into an amazing story and some heart-stopping writing By Liz Read This is an incredible book, the writing quite extraordinary, the story powerful. It is far beyond being a "horse story", there is no anthropomorphising of Roma, it is a direct and powerful story of her life and those who were part of it. Flaherty's language is riveting, powerful, and from the first page you know you are reading something very very special. Don't miss this opportunity to sink yourself into an amazing story and some heart-stopping writing..

I much liked Fan Flaherty's 'Trade' By Christopher Allinson I much liked Fan Flaherty's 'Trade', winner of a Guardian short story competition a few years ago. This new novel 'Sold' is a great read, with well-drawn characters in episodes (and a clever parallel narrative) linked by the fortunes of the central figure, the horse Roma. There are great moments of colour, and moments of darkness. I also liked the style of short sentences and phrases and the structure of mini chapters in the five parts of the novel – seems to me to suit the Kindle format well and made for easier reading than slabs of close text.

Although many might not recognize the name P.G. Wodehouse, they have inevitably come across his work. Wodehouse was a British humorist who wrote novels, short stories, journalism pieces, and other stuff, becoming extremely popular over a 70 year career. Today he is best known for the Jeeves and Blandings Castle novels and short stories, but he was also a playwright and lyricist who was part author and writer of 15 plays and 250 lyrics. Both the name "Jeeves" and the character of Jeeves have become a common part of the English lexicon, meaning a valet or chauffeur. It is even the inspiration behind the popular search engine Ask Jeeves.

Uneasy Money, by P.G. Wodehouse

Review "The very definition of British humor ... in suave hardcover volumes, the dust jackets as natty as the prose."

About the Author Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (P. G. Wodehouse) was an English humorist and writer best known for his Jeeves and Blandings Castle novels. Educated at boarding schools, Wodehouse turned to writing at a young age, demonstrating great skill at humorous sketches and musical lyrics. He continued to write part-time while pursuing, at the behest of his father, a career in banking, and successfully contributed numerous pieces to Punch, Vanity Fair, and The Daily Express, among other publications. In addition to his literary work, Wodehouse was incorporated into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in recognition of his collaboration with Cole Porter on Anything Goes, his lyrics to the song Bill from Show Boat, and his work on the musicals Rosalie and The Three Musketeers.

While interned along with other British citizens in Germany during the Second World War, Wodehouse made a series of radio broadcasts for which he was accused of being a collaborator; and, although later cleared of the charges, he never returned to England. His work has influenced many other writers including Evelyn Waugh, Rudyard Kipling, J. K. Rowling, and John Le Carr?. P. G. Wodehouse died in 1975 at the age of 93.

From AudioFile The plot of this amiable romance is secondary to its style. Wodehouse's masterful language makes high comedy out of situations that would be dull or slapstick in less capable hands. He invites reading aloud, but his effects are fragile, requiring a light, deft touch. Simon Vance's delivery is understated but satis-factory. He has a pleasant voice and a sympathetic feel for the material. But those who have heard the Bertie Wooster series from the BBC may be left wishing for a less restrained performance. J.N. By Glen Engel Cox I do not regret having read all of the Wodehouse books written before this one, but I have to express my delight at finally starting to get to the books that made Wodehouse's reputation. This particular one isn't tied to any of his serieses, but shares a lot with both the Blandings castle and Bertie & Jeeves books. First off, there's Lord Dawlish, the sort of chap who is just a little too nice for his own good, the kind who always gets nipped by one and all for a fiver here or a ten-spot there. Then there's his fiancee, who's obsessed on the money deal; an eccentric wealthy old man; a couple of Americans; and a nightclub-singing Lady (as in Lord and Lady). There's money, and the lack of it, that seems to be a separate character content to flirt with all the rest of the cast. A little plot line regarding golf, keeping bees, transatlantic trips, people who may or may not be who they are, a will that may or may not be the operative one, people mistaken for themselves and others, and true love. My god, the formula is so easy, yet as any one knows who has tried a hand at this stuff, just because you've got the recipe, it doesn't mean your souffle rises in the same way. This is a good one to recommend to people who have never read Wodehouse before, because it is compact and self-contained. It's been said that laughter is the best medicine--if so, then Wodehouse is a wonder drug.

Appleton and Company, and then in the U.K. on October 4, 1917 by Methuen & Co., so it is a fairly early Wodehouse story. Although this is better than most of his early stories, it is not as good as some of his writing that would come later. Those who know Wodehouse will find themselves in familiar territory. The main character of this story is Lord Dawlish, who has a title but not much money, a fact of which his fiancée, Claire Fenwick, reminds him repeatedly. He suddenly finds that he has been left a fortune by a man he hardly knew, and being the honorable man he is he feels he needs to restore at least some of this money to its rightful heirs. This takes him to America, where Claire also finds herself when a friend of hers writes her asking to visit. To attempt to cover a Wodehouse plot completely would take much too long and I could never do it justice. As one would expect there are several interesting characters, and lots of plot twists. In the end, as with all of his stories, love wins out, and the reader enjoys the ride all the way. This edition is another in "The Collector's Wodehouse" series being published by The Overlook Press in the U.S. (in the U.K. it is "The Everyman's Wodehouse" series being published by Everyman's Library).

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Easy Smiles By Richard Liedholm Uneasy Money is an early non-series Wodehouse novel, written before the glory days of the 20s, 30s and 40s, so it is unlikely to be considered as one of the very best of his books. I agree. However, it is book I enjoyed reading and was happy to observe that many of the standard Wodehouse traits are all present: his beautiful use of language, his carefully worked out plots, the moments of pure lunacy, and his delightful characters.Let's just quickly take, as an example, the two heroes (lovers) of the story, Bill and Elizabeth. What a pair! Kind. Well-mannered. And good golfers too! Do people like Bill and Elizabeth really exist? I suppose the argument can be made that there is a little of Bill and Elizabeth in all of us, but I wish I were like Bill more; I love how he is so doggone optimistic. No matter how the cards fall, Bill is ready to face things with a determined hardening of the jaw. You just have to love that sort of thing. There really isn't a time in our world where there are not troubles somewhere, so that means that there will always be a need for Wodehouse novels. You'll likely start with Jeeves and Bertie and end up vacationing at Blandings Castle, but don't forget the dozens of non-series books, including Uneasy Money. Maybe money and love and contentment comes hard for the characters of this story, but the smiles for you, the reader, will certainly come easy.

On 28 June 1914 the Archduke Francis Ferdinand, heir-presumptive to the Hapsburg throne, was shot in the streets of Serajevo, the capital of the Austrian province of Bosnia. Redeemed by the Russo-Turkish war of 1876-7 from Ottoman rule, Bosnia had by the Congress of Berlin in 1878 been entrusted to Austrian administration; but in 1908, fearing lest a Turkey rejuvenated by the Young Turk revolution should seek to revive its claims on Bosnia, the Austrian Government annexed on its own authority a province confided to its care by a European mandate. This arbitrary act was only challenged on paper at the time; but the striking success of Serbia in the Balkan wars of 1912-13 brought out the dangers and defects of Austrian policy.

I expected a short history of a European war, but discovered a global conflict By Rysky As 2014 is the centennial of the beginning of The Great War, I wanted to learn about WWI. My knowledge of that conflict was limited to battles on the western front. The source of that knowledge had been gained mostly from movies and news reels. It surprised me to learn that The Great War was indeed a global conflict as battlies were fought not only in Belgium and France but in countries on the eastern front of Germany many of which I didn't know existed, as well as battles in all parts of Africa and also in the middle east. This book gives the reader a view of the war and of its combatants from a British perspective, which I thought was, for the most part, unbiased and objective. I found it interesting and would recommend it as an academic account of WWI.
