Born to a travelling family on waste ground in the heatwave of 1976, Roma the gypsy horse is destined to pass through the lives of many different people over more than two decades. She experiences love, companionship, cruelty and indifference as circumstance and harsh necessity bring change, always moving her on. But at Roma's birth a bond was forged that can never be broken. Running alongside her story, like a heartbeat, is that of traveller Bill Feeny, the man who can never forget her, and of Elsa, his daughter. SOLD chronicles Roma's part in many different lives, the people she encounters, and her endless capacity for trust and loyalty until she eventually comes full circle, reunited with her roots. Powerful, poignant, sometimes harrowing, SOLD is a fresh and unflinching take on the great tradition of stories about the bond between human and horse.

Terrific, simple story-telling with a fresh new voice. Fan Flaherty's tale of the gypsy mare Roma and the many people she encounters tugs at the heart strings while never straying into sentimentality. The nobility and stoicism of the horse and the resilience of the human spirit are all celebrated here. Loved this book, think you will too. But have a hankie ready...

Don't miss this opportunity to sink yourself into an amazing story and some heart-stopping writing By Liz Read This is an incredible book, the writing quite extraordinary, the story powerful. It is far beyond being a "horse story", there is no anthropomorphising of Roma, it is a direct and powerful story of her life and those who were part of it. Flaherty's language is riveting, powerful, and from the first page you know you are reading something very very special. Don't miss this opportunity to sink yourself into an amazing story and some heart-stopping writing..

I much liked Fan Flaherty's 'Trade' By Christopher Allinson I much liked Fan Flaherty's 'Trade', winner of a Guardian short story competition a few years ago. This new novel 'Sold' is a great read, with well-drawn characters in episodes (and a clever parallel narrative) linked by the fortunes of the central figure, the horse Roma. There are great moments of colour, and moments of darkness. I also liked the style of short sentences and phrases and the structure of mini chapters in the five parts of the novel – seems to me to suit the Kindle format well and made for easier reading than slabs of close text.
