Excerpt from Dealings With the Dead: The Human Soul, Its Migrations and Its TransmigrationsSome men are daily dying; some die ere they have learned how to live; and some find their truest account in revealing the mysteries of both life and death, - even while they themselves perish in the act of revelation, as is most wonderfully done in the remarkable volume now before the reader, - as, alas! almost seems to be the case with the penman of what herein follows. The criterion of the value of a man or woman is the kind and amount of good they do or have done. The standard whereby to judge a thinker, consists in the mental treasures which during life they heap up for the use and benefit of the age that is, and those which are to be, when the fitful fever of their own sorrowful lives shall be ended, and they have passed away to begin in stern reality their dealings with the dead. He or she who adds even one new thought to the age becomes that age's great benefactor, to whom in future times grateful men shall erect monuments and statues.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. William Sydney Porter, the American writer better known as O. Henry, was once one of the most popular authors in the world. Though he’s best remembered today for his fiction about city life at the turn of the twentieth century, Heart of the West, his fourth volume of short stories, is set mostly in the state of Texas in the 1880s, where Porter lived for fourteen years, from the ages of nineteen to thirty-three. For much of that time he lived in Austin, the state capital, but for his first two years in the Lone Star State he lived and worked on a sheep ranch in La Salle County, a dry grassland of post oak and mesquite south of San Antonio, between the Nueces and the Frio Rivers. His humorous and sentimental stories of sheepherders, cowpunchers, trail cooks, prospectors, outlaws, and Texas Rangers offer the modern reader a window into the often-mythologized American West, by someone who saw it firsthand. And like his more famous New York stories, all of them bear the trademark O. Henry twist at the end.

Born September 11, 1862, in Greensboro, North Carolina, William Porter had a rough life right from the start. His mother died of tuberculosis when he was three, and his father was a drunken, improvident doctor. Porter grew up in the household of his uncle, who was a pharmacist; his formal schooling ended at the age of fifteen, and he spent his adolescence working in his uncle’s drugstore, becoming a registered pharmacist himself by the age of nineteen. He was a talented kid who loved to draw and pull pranks, and his Aunt Lina instilled in him a love of great literature. Porter later wrote that he “did more reading between my thirteenth and nineteenth years than I have done in all the years since.” Still, he chafed under the limitations of his life—the hard regime of drugstore work, the shame of his father’s alcoholism, and the uncertainty of living on the charity of others.

In 1882, Porter developed a hacking cough that raised fears he might have tuberculosis himself, so he was sent to live with family friends on a sheep ranch in South Texas. For two years he did light work and soaked up the lore and milieu of the American West that would later inform many of his stories. In 1884, he moved to Austin, where for the next decade he held a number of jobs, including four years as a draftsman for the General Land Office. He enjoyed an active social life in Austin, singing in a church choir, performing in amateur theatrical productions, and appearing with a group called the Hill City Quartette. At the same time, in a foreshadowing of his later life in New York City, he also became a regular in the city’s saloons and gambling dens. In 1887, he impulsively married a nineteen-year-old Austinite named Athol Estes; their first child, a boy, was born a year later, but died within a few hours. Their second, a daughter, Margaret, was born in 1889.

Porter began publishing jokes, humorous sketches, and light verse during his years in Austin, and in 1894 he started his own humor weekly, The Rolling Stone, which only lasted a year. Like many aspiring (and, indeed, established) writers, Porter continued to work a day job, as a teller in an Austin bank, but (again, like most writers) he hated the job, and he left Austin in 1895 to write a column for a newspaper in Houston. In the meantime, a bank examiner discovered that the books didn’t balance at the bank where Porter used to work, and Porter was indicted, perhaps unjustly, for embezzlement. He fled Houston to New Orleans and then to Honduras, and he only returned to Austin when he learned that his wife was seriously ill from tuberculosis. She died in 1897, and in February 1898 William Porter was sentenced to five years in a federal penitentiary in Columbus, Ohio.

In prison, the writer O. Henry was born. His relatively easy job, working as a drug clerk, allowed him time to write, and he composed twelve stories in prison, publishing two of them. The deep shame he felt at being a convicted felon caused him to adopt the pseudonym under which he became famous, though he never did give a definitive account of where it came from. One story is that he got it from a prison guard named Orrin Henry; another says that it came from his earliest days in Austin, when he lived with a family named the Harrells and used to beckon their haughty cat with an exasperated, “Oh, Henry!” Either way, by the time he was released early for good behavior in 1901, after serving three years, three months, and thirty days, the new writer O. Henry already had valuable contacts with magazine editors in New York and the promise of more work.

He settled in New York in 1902 and quickly established a reputation writing short fiction for the popular magazines of the day. Though his earliest stories were set in the American West and Central America, he was soon chiefly known as a lively and observant chronicler of the hardscrabble lives of ordinary New Yorkers, in such stories as “The Gift of Magi” and “The Furnished Room.” Over the next eight years, he became perhaps the most popular writer in the country, publishing hundreds of short stories, and finding himself compared by readers and critics (rather overenthusiastically) to the French novelist Balzac and the great Russian short-story writer Anton Chekhov. Nine collections of his stories were published before he died, and another three were released after his death. He was as profligate with his money, however, as he was skilled at earning it, and through a combination of hard living and reckless generosity, he died broke, from cirrhosis of the liver, kidney failure, and diabetes, in 1910, at the age of forty-seven.

Heart of the West, first published in 1907, collects many, though not all, of O. Henry’s Western stories, and most of the stories in the book, though not all, are set in Texas. Perhaps reflecting William Porter’s own experience as a young man in the middle of nowhere on the Texas prairie, where women were few and far between, many of the stories are comic tales of romantic rivalry, usually featuring two bluff and feckless young men in competition for the attention of the same rather remote and demanding young woman. This comically romantic longing is often deflected into an outlandish competition, the winner of which is supposed to get the girl. In the funniest story in the book, “The Handbook of Hymen” (which is set in Montana), two prospectors, Sanderson Pratt and his partner, Idaho Green, come down out of the mountains and each try to woo a pretty widow by the book—literally. Idaho is relying upon the great work of medieval Persian poetry The Rubiyat of Omar Khayyam—which Sanderson gathers is a volume of verse by someone named Homer K. M.—while Sanderson himself relies upon an almanac entitled Herkheimer’s Handbook of Indispensable Information. Against all expectation, at least in courting this particular woman, Herkheimer turns out to trump the Rubiyat. “Let us sit on this log at the roadside,” Sanderson invites the widow, Mrs. Sampson,

“and forget the inhumanity and ribaldry of the poets. It is in the glorious columns of ascertained facts and legalized measures that beauty is to be found. In this very log we sit upon, Mrs. Sampson,” says I, “is statistics more wonderful than any poem. The rings show it was sixty years old. At the depth of two thousand feet it would become coal in three thousand years. The deepest coal mine in the world is at Killingworth, near Newcastle. A box four feet long, three feet wide, and two feet eight inches deep will hold one ton of coal. If an artery is cut, compress it above the wound. A man’s leg contains thirty bones. The Tower of London was burned in 1841.”

“Go on, Mr. Pratt,” says Mrs. Sampson. “Them ideas is so original and soothing. I think statistics is just as lovely as they can be.”

Poor Idaho Green obviously doesn’t have a chance, though in the end the matter is settled in a more dramatic fashion.

This same basic plot is reflected throughout the book. In “Cupid a la Carte,” set in the boomtown of Guthrie, Oklahoma—“’Twas when the Oklahoma country was in first bloom. Guthrie was rising in the middle of it like a lump of self-raising dough”—two young men on the make try to impress a pretty waitress; she’s so disgusted by the way the men just shovel the food down that each resolves to see how long he can go without eating at all, in a series of can-you-top-this stunts that is resolved when one of them proves his true worth to the young woman. And in “The Pimienta Pancakes,” two traditional enemies, a cowman and a sheepman, vie for the heart of a girl using a legendary pancake recipe as ammunition. Not all of the rivalries are en...

By Bradawn "Refreshing" is the first adjective that comes to mind in describing "Heart of the West". I hadn't read any of O. Henry's stories in many, many years, and it is easy to forget how agile he can be in his writing in bringing about the "typical" O. Henry ending. I was pleased to find subtlety and sensitivity that I had missed in my youthful readings of O. Henry. In the title story, for example, he is able to present two simple cowpokes discussing (and ultimately resolving) somewhat nuanced marital issues. I purchased this volume in order to see what the original Cisco Kid was like. I was certainly enlightened in that regard, though I should say that that story itself is a dark, albeit characteristically clever, tale.

The Moccasin Maker, by Emily Pauline Johnson

Review E. Pauline Johnson, the daughter of a Mohawk Chief and an English woman, was born in Canada in 1861. Moccasin Maker opens with the life story of the author's mother, Lydia. The stories that follow concern what it means to be Indian in a country conquered by the British. "The Tenas Klootchman" (girl-baby in Chinook) is the touching, true story of Maarda, an Indian woman whose beautifully woven baby basket sits empty after her infant dies, and a sick white widow-woman whom Maarda finds carrying a strong, healthy infant girl "rolled in a shawl." While Maarda cares for the woman and child, the empty basket haunts her: "she seemed to see a wee flower face looking up at her like the blossom of a russet-brown pansy." In addition to lovely prose and elegant plot twists, this collection is particularly stunning for the honor and respect it pays to the birth cultures of the author. -- For great reviews of books for girls, check out Let's Hear It for the Girls: 375 Great Books for Readers 2-14. -- From 500 Great Books by Women; review by Jesse Larsen

Eisenberg First Nations/Anglo Canadian writer Pauline Johnson's works have long since passed out of fashion, but the best of her poetry and prose are certainly worth reading. This once famous collection of her prose writings is well worth spending time with. The largest work is a seventy-odd page biography of her English mother, a childhood victim of abuse and neglect, who journeyed to North America as a little girl, stayed, married a Canadian Indian chief and lived a mostly happy adult life, is oddly moving. It paints a haunting picture of an innocent world still full of possibilities such as no longer exist in the twenty-first century. The other works, both fiction and non-fiction are equally fine. The Victorian novel and melodrama are clearly influences here, but the clarity of Johnson's vision is really special.

WHAT IS A CREATIVE COLORING JOURNAL? A Creative Coloring Journal is a coloring book, a journal, and a book filled with uplifting thoughts and whimsical drawings that delight your heart and bring you joy. "When the author/illustrator discovered drawing and coloring in her journals, she was going through a difficult time in her life. Gauntlett had no idea of the magnitude combining both words and pictures together would be for her. When she added positive messages to her drawings she was well on her way to healing physically and emotionally! After writing her first illustrative memoir, “ Finding Pockets of Happiness, An Illustrator's Memoir” Donna Gauntlett knew she also wanted to re-create a Creative Coloring Journal for others that was filled with whimsical artwork, positive messages and creative prompts. She knew others would benefit from tapping into their own creativity. Each page has artwork to color AND positive messages. Many pages have white space, clouds, or bubbles to write your own thoughts in and answer questions to prompts that are posed. This is what makes this CREATIVE COLORING JOURNAL different from a coloring book. You can personalize it with your dreams, thoughts, and ideas. MAKE IT YOUR OWN! It’s an excellent way to give your feelings a voice and write down how you’ll get through challenges and obstacles and all the joys life has brought your way. Let your pens, pencils, crayons, paints, chalk and markers “FALL” onto the page giving you an opportunity to experience the joy of being ENVELOPED in the world of creativity and imagination. This book was designed to help you connect with your emotions and feelings, as well as help develop your drawing abilities, express your gratitude and happiness, and expand your creativity. There are two alphabets and two pages of drawings to add to your artwork and sample demonstrations included.

By Rebecca Hutchins While Donna's coloring book is a wonderful companion to her book Finding Pockets of Happiness, it also stands as a fun and yet inspirational book by it'self. Donna's coloring book is not just a plain adult coloring book. Unlike what we see filling the shelves of retailers, her book is filled with inspiration and yet challenges you to remember and re-experience the freedom of childhood. I do believe this book can also be used as a time to enjoy coloring and filling in the pages with a friend, family member or your own children. So whether you are needing space and a way to refresh the joy of life, spend some child like time with your children or simply have a time of fun and fellowship with a friend (or many friends) this book is definitely worth purchasing....I promise you, it will make you smile and perhaps laugh out loud!

  • Little Dorrit is a novel by Charles Dickens, originally published in serial form between 1855 and 1857. It satirizes the shortcomings of both government and society, including the institution of debtors' prisons, where debtors were imprisoned, unable to work, until they repaid their debts. The prison in this case is the Marshalsea, where Dickens's own father had been imprisoned. Dickens is also critical of the lack of a social safety net, the treatment and safety of industrial workers, as well the bureaucracy of the British Treasury, in the form of his fictional "Circumlocution Office". In addition he satirizes the stratification of society that results from the British class system

From the Inside Flap Of the complex, richly rewarding masterworks he wrote in the last decade of his life, Little Dorrit is the book in which Charles Dickens most fully unleashed his indignation at the fallen state of mid-Victorian society. Crammed with persons and incidents in whose recreation nothing is accidental or spurious, containing, in its picture of the Circumlocution Office, the most witheringly exact satire of a bureaucracy we possess, Little Dorrit is a stunning example of how thoroughly Dickens could put his flair for the theatrical and his comic genius the service of his passion for justice.

214 of 218 people found the following review helpful. maturing beyond the prison of self By Penelope Schmitt This is my personal favorite among Dickens novels, fully equal to Bleak House, though not nearly as widely read or admired. Most reviewers miss the fact that debtors prisons had long been closed before Dickens wrote the novel, so 'reform' was in no way its objective. What he really wanted to explore was self-imprisonment. His main character, Arthur Clennam, has been imprisoned by family strictures all his life. Denied love as a child, exiled from his sweetheart as a young man to an outpost of the family business in China, left by his father only with a watch inscribed 'DNF' meaning 'do not forget' (what he doesn't know) Arthur returns to England. We first see him 'imprisoned' in quarantine with others who suffer spiritual incarcerations of their own. The spiritual heart of this novel is the story of how Arthur loses hope that he can 'go home again' and pick up with his old life, how he reconstructs a personal life and satisfying work, and how he endures the collapse of the past and all its guilty debts, ultimately being set free to live life on a new foundation. This novel will hearten those who have arrived in the middle of our lives feeling that like Arthur, we stand among ruins, 'descending a green and growing tree' whose limbs die and wither under us as we come down. But when he is finally stripped of everything, Arthur gains all. While this great bildungsroman of maturity is being carried forward, Dickens offers a wealth of characters, plots, and subplots that will keep Dickens lovers turning pages in well-founded faith that Boz will once again knit all together in a satisfying tapestry of incident and meaning. It could be summed up as "forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors." All the characters are jailed by something--Little Dorrit herself by her prison home, her father by his dependency and pathetic grasping for reputation. Blandois, the wicked murderer, shows up first in a Marseilles prison and bestrides the plot with his vile presence. Arthur's mother stays voluntarily imprisoned in a decaying house and her wheelchair, and worse, in wrath and jealousy. We also meet a housemaid trapped in uncontrollable rage, the woman who abducts her, walled in pride and hatred, a young woman trapped in adoration of a worthless husband, parents frozen in grief over a lost child, a financier transfixed with the knowledge of his own falsity . . . and more. Secrets, nightmares, murders, lost deeds and treasure, stolen fortunes, all abound in this vivid and satisfying plum pudding of a novel. Modern readers may weary of the satirical chapters on 'the Circumlocution Office'--but they're no worse than the treatment of the Court of Chancery in Bleak House. The best of this novel is that it is not all written just for the satisfactory settlement of some young person, but rather for the arrival at full maturity of a man who is already adult at the novel's opening. Arthur (one remembers that Britain's legendary king bore that name) rescues others from despair, and finally learns to let others so rescue him. This is a redemptive novel, that shows us it is possible to see that we are inside the prison of who we've been taught we are, and believe we can't stop being, and it is possible to break beyond those prison walls and 'go down to a life' of quiet decency and common happiness. A great, grownup read!

Thanks to the BBC dramatization, it has been saved from obscurity. Even though the television adaptation is quite good, it is no substitute for reading the full text of the book. I would disagree with those who say this was not one of the author's best novels; on the contrary, I feel it is one of his very best. Dickens wrote so many great books of which I am a fan. Among my favorites are: Bleak House, A Tale of Two Cities, and David Copperfield. Of all these masterpieces, Little Dorrit is my absolute favorite. I heard somewhere that Shaw felt Little Dorrit was Dickens's best work. Who am I to argue with Shaw? I believe many critics and those who study Dickens would agree. Ironically, the work was wildly popular during Dickens own life when it was published in serial form. In fact, that is the best way to read the novel...in small portions. You will choke to death if you try and consume it in one bite. This novel is too big and rich to devour quickly. I had a difficult time getting into the book after the initial few chapters but was richly rewarded as I continued on. This is not a book for lightweights. The length of the book is quite intimidating, the plot is complex, and the characters numerous; that being said, it is well worth the effort to read. I could not put it down as I came to the last few hundred pages. I absolutely loved it by the time I finished the book. It is one of Dickens's darker novels, which may put some off. Even so, many, if not most, of Dickens novels deal with unpleasant topics, and there is quite a bit of humor (Flora, her aunt, Afferty...) in Little Dorrit to balance the darkness. In fact the book is full of balance - wonderful Dickens prose, masterful characterization, as well as one the best plots ever devised. As others have said so well, this novel stands up to multiple readings. I certainly plan to reread and savor it many times.

Dickens takes us from Marseilles, home to an evil man whose smile makes his moustache disappear under his top lip and draws us into a dark, damp, murky Victorian London where one's whole future existence seems to be mapped out at birth, and where to escape from one's perceived 'destiny' is both sacriligeous and impossible. The Marshalsea Prison is a place all of us can visualise - a debtors prison from which many fail to escape, the dubious honour of the Father of the Marshalsea bestowed on the longest-serving inmate. Little Dorrit - Amy - is the daughter of the Father of the Marshalsea and this is her tale, one which stretches across the grime of smoggy nineteenth century London to the pollution of Continental Europe. The cast of characters is fascinating and Dickens rarely misses a trick - each is easily comparable to people any of us knows today. I studied this book at school and I have read it four or five times since.

Beautiful Cat Pictures in an Adult Coloring Book By Amazon Customer I purchased several copies of this beautiful coloring book to give away as Christmas presents this year. These hand-drawn pictures are very well done and have unique Egyptian backgrounds, such as flowers, birds, hieroglyphics. I think they'll make wonderful presents for my adult sisters and friends, as well as a neighborhood boy. Anyone who likes cats will enjoy this coloring book, meant for all ages. Some designs are quite intricate while others will be easy for kids. What a great way for adults to share time with their children, without computers and TVs.

The career of The Leader remains one of the mysteries of history. This man, illegitimate and uneducated, hysterical and superstitious, gathered about him a crowded following of those who had been discontented, but whom he turned into fanatics. Apparently by pure force of personality he seized without resistance the government of one of the world's great nations. So much is unlikely enough. But as the ruler of a civilized country he imposed upon its people the absolute despotism of a primitive sultanate. He honeycombed its society with spies. He imprisoned, tortured, and executed without trial or check. And while all this went on he received the most impassioned loyalty of his subjects! Morality was abandoned at his command with as much alacrity as common sense. He himself was subject to the grossest superstitions. He listened to astrologers and fortunetellers—and executed them when they foretold disaster. But it is not enough to be amazed at the man himself. The great mystery is that people of the Twentieth Century, trained in science and technically advanced, should join in this orgy of what seems mere madness ...

Reasonably well written and the characters are, if somewhat one-dimensional, good. The Tito character is a bit overblown in terms of corruption but otherwise accurate
