The Beetle: A Mystery, by Richard Marsh

About the Author About The Author

Richard Marsh (1857 – 1915) was the pseudonym of the British author born Richard Bernard Heldmann. A best-selling and prolific author of the late 19th century and the Edwardian period, Marsh is best known now for his supernatural thriller novel The Beetle, which was published the same year as Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897), and was initially even more popular. Marsh produced nearly 80 volumes of fiction and numerous short stories, in genres including horror, crime and romance. Many of these have been republished recently, beginning with The Beetle during 2004. Marsh's grandson Robert Aickman was a notable writer of short "strange stories".

A Forgotten Classic Now Available By PhineasB I first came across references to this forgotten classic in the works of British occultist Kenneth Grant. Firmly rooted in the Victorian appetite for mystery and the supernatural, 'The Beetle' is a masterpiece of horror and occult fiction. Originally published in 1897, the same year as Bram Stoker's 'Dracula', Richard Marsh's highly original creation at one point actually outsold Stoker's famous vampire primer. Like Stoker's other masterpiece, 'The Jewel of Seven Stars', which was brought to the screen in the seventies with Hammer's stylish retelling as 'Blood From the Mummy's Tomb' (and the forgettable 'The Awakening'), 'The Beetle' would be well served with a film adaptation, although it might be hard pressed to find an appreciative audience today. For those with a taste for occult-inspired fiction along the lines of H.P. Lovecraft, Arthur Machen, Bram Stoker, Sax Rohmer, Algernon Blackwood and others, 'The Beetle' will not disappoint. See also the cheaper Wordsworth edition, with a fine introduction by David Stuart Davies.

Then, whether I was dead or living, I said to myself that this could be nothing human, -nothing fashioned in God's image could wear such a shape as that. Fingers were pressed into my cheeks, they were thrust into my mouth, they touched my staring eyes, shut my eyelids, then opened them again, and-horror of horrors!-the blubber lips were pressed to mine-the soul of something evil entered into me in the guise of a kiss."Published in 1897, the same year as Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Beetle is a classic Victorian weird/sensation novel, written in wonderfully ripe, overwrought prose, and featuring (of course!) a sinister oriental figure with the power to transform himself. This fiend persecutes and hypnotically asserts control over an upstanding British man, the hero of the novel. In many ways, this sort of novel foreshadowed Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu novels, but it also fed into the late 19th-century fascination with all things Egyptian. Later this sort of tale would be the grist for 20th century mummy films and Boris Karloff's mesmerizing stare, but unfortunately The Beetle never seems to have made the leap into popular modern culture the way that Dracula did. A pity, as this is an equally engrossing supernatural tale.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A quintessential fin-de-siecle novel By Jay Dickson Actually outselling DRACULA when they both came out in 1897, Richard Marsh's THE BEETLE was much talked about for years after its publication and even turned into a silent film. It's not as sustained as Bram Stoker's most famous novel and drags off a bit towards the end in a complicated railway chase, but sections of it are as frightening as anything Stoker ever wrote. Like DRACULA, Marsh's novel involves an Eastern invader with supernatural powers coming to England to attack a beautiful woman; it also invokes a whole series of tropes typical of the period, including gender confusion, fears of rampant unchecked sexual experimentation, imperialist concerns, and anxieties regarding the explosion of London's urban growth. The novel's central (and only really memorable) character is the titular Beetle, a monster from Egypt that can change its sex, its size, and its species: it comes to London to seek revenge against a politician who abandoned it decades ago in Cairo, and seeks to destroy him through his New Woman fiancée. The Beetle's presence in the novel is much more terrifying than its actual plans (which are never thoroughly explained); even so, it's quite a satisfyingly terrible monster. The novel's initial quarter, told from the view of a vagrant who sneaks into a London house for shelter in a storm only to find himself completely in the Beetle's mesmeric thrall, is outstanding in its hallucinatory detail and its evocation of sensory horror.Unlike DRACULA, the THE BEETLE became almost forgotten within a generation. In just the last decade, however, multiple editions of it have appeared, not only because it speaks to much to the scholarship of critics in the fin de siecle (such as Elaine Showalter, Roger Luckhurst, and Sally Ledger) but also because it's such a rattling good read. This thoughtfully annotated edition from Valancourt, printed on beautiful paper and with the novel's original illustrations, may well be the best out there.

How is this book unique?

Formatted for E-Readers, Unabridged & Original version. You will find it much more comfortable to read on your device/app. Easy on your eyes. Includes: 15 Colored Illustrations and Biography The History of the Peloponnesian War is a historical account of the Peloponnesian War (431–404 BC), which was fought between the Peloponnesian League (led by Sparta) and the Delian League (led by Athens). It was written by Thucydides, an Athenian historian who also happened to serve as an Athenian general during the war. His account of the conflict is widely considered to be a classic and regarded as one of the earliest scholarly works of history. The History is divided into eight books. Analyses of the History generally occur in one of two camps. On the one hand, some scholars view the work as an objective and scientific piece of history. The judgment of J. B. Bury reflects his traditional interpretation of the work: "[The History is] severe in its detachment, written from a purely intellectual point of view, unencumbered with platitudes and moral judgments, cold and critical." On the other hand, in keeping with more recent interpretations that are associated with reader-response criticism, the History can be read as a piece of literature rather than an objective record of the historical events. This view is embodied in the words of W. R. Connor, who describes Thucydides as "an artist who responds to, selects and skillfully arranges his material, and develops its symbolic and emotional potential."

Streutker There are four main translations of Thucydides available for the English reader:Thomas Hobbes' 1628 version. Although made over 300 years ago this translation is still considered a classic by many in the English-speaking world. Hobbes is best known for writing "Leviathan" that classic work on Politics that all College students in the Western world for the past 200 years had to read. Do you like Shakespeare? If so give this edition a try. Hobbes vigorous and lively Jacobean English prose will enchant those more literary minded souls - however, Hobbes version has been noted for some inaccuracies due to his lack of proper understanding of the original Greek language text.William Smith's 1754 translation. Most know of Crawley and Hobbes works but Smith's excellent 18th century version has been almost forgotten. I think you can only get it in a used edition on abebooks dot com. Smith's prose is as majestic as you you expect for a 18th century translation. While a bit hard to read for most modern readers Smith's prose is worth the effort if you stick with him. Some things were not meant to be "dumbed down". I compare reading Smith's Thucydides to plowing through Whiston's translation of Josephus. The mid-Victorian (1874) Richard Crawley version is the one that most English speaking people were familiar with until the Penguin Books edition came out. This is a much easier version to understand than the Hobbes and Smith translations. While still retaining a very formal prose style it captures the Greek much more accurately than any previous version. This translation has the best balance between literary style and accuracy to the original text. This is the edition that many of our Grandparents and Great Grandparents read in school or College. Modern Library puts out a very affordable edition.Rex Warner's Penguin edition. This is the version offered here. Warner is excellent for those who want to avoid the archaic and more challenging prose of Hobbes, Smith, or Crawley. He is very clear and lucid in his rendition of the text. This edition is more suitable for modern readers who want an easy to read prose that maintains accuracy. I think that Warner's translation is the only serious rival to Richard Crawley's version. For those of you who are first embarking on your exploration of Thucydides I would recommend this edition.

Alcat "History of the Peloponnesian War" is, superficially, merely an account of a war that happened centuries ago, the Peloponnesian War, between Athenas and Sparta. Of course, you might think that the subject is trivial to you. After all, how important can a book like that be?. Well, if you were to think that, you would be enormously mistaken. To start with, this book is a milestone you need to be aware of. Thucydides, its author, is very possibly the first modern historian. He tried to explain the causes of the Peloponnesian War, without reducing its complexity by saying that the gods had motivated it. Thucydides doesn't follow the easy path; instead, he searches those causes in human nature, and in power. He doesn't weave tales, but tries to write History. It is rather astonishing how objective this Athenian was when he analyzed the war, and all that happened immediately before it. He examines methodically many events, paying special attention to facts. The author also gives his opinion from time to time, but he doesn't judge whether an action is good or evil: he merely shows that those that have power can use it as they see fit. Due to that, Thucydides is called by many the first realist theoretician. I was especially taken aback by how well he expresses his ideas regarding the fact that "power makes right" in the Melian debate. I don't agree with him, but I cannot deny that he makes a powerful case, and that his point of view is shared nowadays by many noteworthy thinkers. It is important to point out that in "History of the Peloponnesian War" you will find a painstaking account of many things that actually happened, but also some speeches that weren't made by the actors, but could have been made by them. To explain that more clearly: Thucydides wrote some political dialogues and monologues that allow us to understand some aspects of the conflict (and many of his ideas) better. The introduction to this edition also highlights that the author sometimes made up some of the speeches (from the data he had), and was present when others were pronounced. My favorite speech is the one made by Pericles, in honor of the men who died during the war. In that discourse, he explains why those men fought and died to defend Athens, and what Athens meant not only for Athenians but also for Greece. This book isn't easy to read, but it is well-worth the effort. The translation is quite good, so that will make your task a little easier. If you don't feel like reading this book all at once, try to read it little by little. The results will be the same, but you won't feel dismayed by the need of finishing it immediately. Also, if you can, try to relate some of Thucydides themes to our modern world. You will find that easier that you might think, and it will make you pay more attention to what you are reading. You are likely to be very surprised, for example, at how similar some of nowaday's justifications for taking advantage of power without paying attention to justice are to those that Thucydides already made a long time ago. On the whole, I highly recommend this book :)Belen Alcat

85 of 92 people found the following review helpful. The Originator By Buce I had a Greek teacher who loved Herodotus, and did not love Thucydides. The consequences were not, perhaps, what you might expect. In the event, when we studied Herodotus, she would chatter on about the background, the characters. When we came to Thucydides, without nearly so much to entertain her, we just read the Greek.Good thing, too. Herodotus' Greek is not elegant, and it is not pure Attic. But it is accessible to the relative novice. Thucydides, on the other hand, is about as hard as it comes - made worse by the fact that he is most accessible where he is least interesting, which is to say in the passages of pure battle narrative. It is in the "reflective" passages - where his "characters" are trying to explain or justify their actions, or where he is simply trying to make sense of an appalling calamity - that he is most obscure. Is this an accident? I think not. Thucydides is, after all, an originator. He is perhaps not quite the first to give us a narrative of events, but he is surely the first to try to make sense of it all. And to recognize the path taken by his own beloved country as the course of stark strategy. It is the story, in short (at least at one level) of how a nation perhaps too rich and too self assured, can go terribly wrong. It was fashionable to cite Thucydides in the dark days of the Vietnam War. I wonder if the comparison shows us too much flattery. For Thucydides' story is not only a story about the arrogance of power. Athens at its best was a priceless treasure. Anyone can throw away an opportunity, but some opportunities are better than others.Suggestion: of all the readers who responded to the challenge of Thucydides, none met it more dramatically than Thomas Hobbes, the British political philosopher who began his career by fashioning the first great English translation of the Peloponnesian War. Hobbes' 17th-Century translation is perhaps not the most accessible, and I gather it is not the most accurate. But Hobbes has a gnarly directness of his own, and echoes of Thucydides reverberate through just about everything he later wrote.

Nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and a finalist in the USA Best Book Awards in the Historical Fiction category, Devil Knows: A Tale of Murder and Madness in America’s First Century is a mystery-in-the-archives thriller written with great charm and cinematic flair.

In the dead of night at the height of the 1692 Salem mania, a dying smallpox victim collapses in prison while visiting a witch condemned to hang – Mary Bradbury, the great ancestor of famed writer Ray Bradbury.

A delirious old man, Hopestill Foster, is brought before the Rev. Cotton Mather, the infamous witch-hunter and the most powerful man in ancient Boston, for a very private interrogation. Mather is desperate for answers about Foster’s past because he knows it ties into his own.

Better had he not asked.

Over the course of the prisoner telling his story to the cleric, 60 years of a terrible history unfolds, at the heart of which is a monstrous secret about Mather’s family that must not be allowed to escape the room where Foster is being held.

Hopestill Foster, the novel's protagonist, a man inured to a lifetime of suffering and one to whom a great wrong was done by him and to him in his youth, ultimately has to decide. Pass on, leaving the wreckage of his life behind, or accept a final deadly mission to make things right.

For Hopestill Foster, there is only one choice.

David Joseph Kolb’s Devil Knows: A Tale of Murder and Madness in America’s First Century, a thrilling historical adventure in the grand storytelling tradition of Northwest Passage and Drums Along the Mohawk, breaks new literary ground about the very first American century - a nearly forgotten post-Pilgrim past when intolerance, misogyny and ignorance culminated in horrifying outrages against ordinary people.

Yet it rediscovers, too, that hope was never lost, and that heroes were always among us.

Devil Knows: A Tale of Murder and Madness in America's First Century, by David Joseph Kolb

Review "With relentless research, fascinating characters and a great storyteller's imagination, David Kolb unravels a lingering mystery from the historical horror known as the Salem witch trials: How did Mary Bradbury become Salem's only convicted "witch" to escape execution? Like other great historical fiction, Kolb's narrative picks up where facts leave off and reveals disturbing, yet valuable, truths." - Clarence Page, Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist for the Chicago Tribune "Award-winning journalist David Kolb has created an interwoven tale of the earliest days of American history. Religious differences and philosophies, witches, battles and conspiracies against the Native American people all lead to an intriguing tale. In this well-researched story he shows how the earliest inhabitants of New England fought, conspired, loved and lived in the New World." - John McGarry, CEO, Lakeshore (MI) Museum Center

Not being much of a history buff I was surprised and delighted to find myself getting caught up in the period, fascinated by the difficult life of our early American ancestors. Hopestill Foster, through whose eyes much of the story is told, was a delightful combination of simplicity and courage, and I truly cared what happened to him. This is the first time I can remember enjoying a story so much while at the same time coming away from a book feeling like I'd genuinely learned something. Part mystery, part history, totally enthralling!

By cp7622 The author has thoroughly researched an early American period and provided insight into a dark chapter in the history of our country, with enough fiction mixed into keep the story intriguing. Plenty of detail and well developed characters keep the history from being dry, and it is fascinating to learn in the afterward how much fact and how little fiction is contained in the story. I may read it again to apply what I learned later in to book to the earlier chapters to increase my understanding. Great presentation that I highly recommend.

By Amazon Customer David Kolb has written a captivating book about this historical time period. He very skillfully introduces us to an engaging character whose life we travel through as the threads of this intricately woven story unravels. The layers of history that we learn about along the way on this suspenseful journey are both surprising and appalling. I could not put this book down until the last page was turned!

Murder in an ethnic London neighborhood By Patto This novel, which appeared in 1921, has a fascinating setting - South Paddington, home to working people and shopkeepers of various cultures and languages. Struggling writers also like the neighborhood for its cheap lodgings and eating places. The Jewish community dominates the novel. But while contemporary authors were indulging in scornful Jewish stereotypes and Jewish villains, Fletcher gives us warm-hearted, personable, attractive Jewish characters. (His Asian characters, by contrast, are stereotypes.)The story opens with the murder of an old Jewish pawnbroker. Our Scottish hero, Andrew Lauriston, a penniless aspiring writer, has the misfortune of finding the body, and is accused of killing and robbing the old man. The plot evolves around the efforts of his friends and supporters to find the real murderer.Among Lauriston's Jewish friends are Melchor (Melky) Rubinstein and Zillah Wildrose. Melky is a thoroughly engaging young man, a small-time entrepreneur who buys and sells jewelry in the neighborhood, uneducated but smart and deeply loyal to his friends. Zillah is granddaughter to the murdered man - pretty, college educated and an excellent businesswoman. She provides a romantic interest. In fact, romance is in the air throughout this adventure. Several characters find love in the process of finding the murderer. We know from the title that there's a fabulous diamond involved in the mystery. But it's personalities not diamonds that make this book so much fun. And plot twists, of course.J. S. Fletcher is one of my favorite Golden Age mystery writers. I can recommend most of his books. I especially like the Resurrected Press editions, which are well produced and have nice little introductions. He did write a few less wonderful books, but the Resurrected Press editions are all well worth reading.

Not sure how to describe this book, there is mystery, murder, and, lots of carefully drawn characters. There isn't a single protagonist driving this story, instead, the focus falls upon one character after another as they work to unravel the mystery. I'd say there is a surprise ending, but, to me, the story has no real denouement, it just sort of runs out of angles and ends. Not a bad read though, along the way it takes some incredible twists and turns, with surprises at every turn, and more characters than you can keep track of. And, as each character in turn seems to drive the story for a while, you see characters that were prominent early on fade to mere mention towards the end. Much of the mystery, and a lot of the plot, never seem to be completely resolved, you never know who really done it. Rather strange for a mystery tale not to have a comprehensive wrap at the end, a summation of events with the guilty party found and justice dealt,. You never really find out who done it. You're left with a pretty good idea of who it is, but, not really wrapped up in a basket as you normally expect from a mystery novel. There is a wrap up of sorts, but, for the most part this story just winds down and comes to an end.
