In the novella You Must Fight Them, a short, bookish half-Mexican doctoral student returns to his hometown of Woodland, California, and tries to reconnect with Lupita Valdez, the girl he worshipped in high school. But in order to date Lupita, he must first fight her three hulking brothers. Attempting to make sense of his unusual predicament, he ruminates on his many insecurities--his definition of manhood and the ambiguities of his mixed-race identity.

In this collection we meet characters navigating the difficult situations that arise when different worlds collide, from a professor teaching a course on Latino gangs who makes the unwise decision to invite two former rival gang members as guest lecturers, to an artist threatened by the twin sons of his poor white neighbor. Though this memorable cast of characters faces unique quandaries--and deals with these problems in questionable ways--their stories are driven by a desire to set the record straight.

Review

"Montoya writes with a marvelous economy of prose, parsing comedy and pathos only paragraphs apart. . . . In its realism about the devastating strength of family ties and the tenuousness of romantic passion, You Must Fight Them is a wise and entertaining tale."--Pasatiempo

"Montoya proves that he is a master of the short form with these gripping, evocative, and deftly crafted narratives of the Chicano experience."-- Daniel A. Olivas, El Paso Times

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Powerful Read By Phillip Victor Montoya takes an unflinching look at the fine line between love and obsession, cowardice and valor, moral strength and moral weakness. These conflicts run parallel to the protagonist's ambivalence over his biracial identity and his efforts to resolve it. This in itself makes this nuanced story worth reading. However the story moves deeper into the largely biological realm of "fight/flight" as it impacts one's sense of purpose, mood, and emotional maturity. Unlike the Freudian castration anxiety which is ultimately based on guilt and identification with the aggressor, our protagonist's struggle to regain his lost "cajones" comes from a desire to conquer fear in its most primitive sense without appeasement or compromise. This is no easy task when facing one's fear means being true to a self that one has lost a sense of certainty of. Montoya has once again wrote a thoroughly original tale. A truly unique voice, he spares nothing in his willingness to face the truth head on.

This Pulitzer Prize winning novel was written by Booth Tarkington in the early 20th century as part of a trilogy that explored the lives of a family across multiple generations in a fictional version of Indianapolis. Tarkington wonderfully traces the decline of what was once an aristocratic family from the end of the Civil War to the early 20th century, earning praise for the book's historical realism.

Review

"An admirable study of character and of American life." ―New York Times

From the Inside Flap Winner of the Pulitzer Prize when it was first published in 1918, The Magnificent Ambersons chronicles the changing fortunes of three generations of an American dynasty. The protagonist of Booth Tarkington's great historical drama is George Amberson Minafer, the spoiled and arrogant grandson of the founder of the family's magnificence. Eclipsed by a new breed of developers, financiers, and manufacturers, this pampered scion begins his gradual descent from the midwestern aristocracy to the working class. Today The Magnificent Ambersons is best known through the 1942 Orson Welles movie, but as the critic Stanley Kauffmann noted, "It is high time that [the novel] appear again, to stand outside the force of Welles's genius, confident in its own right." "The Magnificent Ambersons is perhaps Tarkington's best novel," judged Van Wyck Brooks. "[It is] a typical story of an American family and town--the great family that locally ruled the roost and vanished virtually in a day as the town spread and darkened into a city. This novel no doubt was a permanent page in the social history of the United States, so admirably conceived and written was the tale of the Ambersons, their house, their fate and the growth of the community in which they were submerged in the end."

White gloves and riffraff By Jerry Clyde Phillips I hate to admit it, but if this novel had not been included in the Modern Library's Top 100, I probably would have never picked it up. I have never been a fan of socially conscious literature, and I anticipated a novel in the style of William Dean Howells - full of cardboard characters, most of whom would be down trodden and hopeless, or rich and ruthless, and enough moral pronouncements to make me feel guilty for at least a day or two. Thankfully, I let the Modern Library editors convince me that the book was worth reading. The novel is set during the dawning of the twentieth century and concerns itself with the impact of mechanical innovation on the bucolic life styles of a midwestern town. As the novel opens, the gulf between prominent families and their aristocratic lives are contrasted with those in society whose main purpose it is to support this luxurious and frivolous existence. The aristocracy is personified by the Amberson family, wealthy and prominent, and particularly by George Amberson Minafer, the spoiled grandson of the family's founder. He is unable to understand that a great revolution is taking place around him, that the lifestyle he has always known is soon to become anachronistic as those people with talent, luck and a little capital will soon surpass him in wealth and prestige. Although he has the talent to join this new mechanical age, he prefers to be and to remain a gentleman and to believe that "being things" is far superior to "doing things."As the midwestern town grows and expands and becomes more and more industrial, and even as the Amberson family compound becomes surrounded by apartment buildings and factories, George is unable to accept the fact that he and his family are becoming irrelevant. As the town quickly turns into a dirty and depressing city and the Amberson fortune begins to crumble, he still dresses for dinner, still drives a horse and cart, and still holds to his standards "as a gentleman." Tarkington weaves in subplots involving the love story of George's widowed mother and the Henry Ford-like Eugene Morgan as well as George's own romantic involvement with Morgan's daughter. These stories add a subtle ironic twist to the narrative as well as allowing the author to delve deeper into the consciouness of his spoiled (but sympathetic) antagonist.Although there is some of Howells influence in this book, Tarkington does not succumb to the artistic sterility of his mentor. This author is able to tell an interesting story and to develop characters that are not only realistic, but invoke an emotional response from the reader. And although the ending seems to me a little contrived and more in keeping with some of the "realist" writers of the early twentieth century, Tarkington's novel is, in the end, successful and offers an enjoyable reading experience.

Epic in scope, it follows the rise and fall of the Ambersons as the spoiled and arrogant George Minafer grows up. I enjoyed the somewhat melodramatic story and found many parallels between these times and the world of today. The plot is emotional and powerful, and it is easy to see why Orson Welles would have wanted so much to make it a film. What makes the book especially interesting, however, is Booth Tarkington's ability to understand and describe the changes going through America at the time. The setting is more than just a "character;" it dictates the circumstances of its inhabitants. It provides the foundation for the way of life they must live. This is not only a tale of George and his family falling from great heights, but also a record of how a small town grew into a city, how automobiles changed the landscape in which we live, how people were forced to adapt to this unsympathetic setting between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He writes mainly from George's point of view, so there is a romantic, nostalgic vision of how things once were, but Tarkington is not fooled into believing that technological and social change has not made some things better, just as he isn't fooled into thinking they haven't made some things worse. What the Ambersons saw as tragedy and loss, others saw as opportunity. I percieved no moral lesson or message; this book is about the tragedy and loss of a proud clan unable to comprehend that in an industrial age, life was no longer static.(There is also a good lesson in here on the risks of not diversifying your investments!)

50 of 57 people found the following review helpful. thankfully saved from the ash heap By Orrin C. Judd This Pulitzer Prize winning novel tells the story of the decline of the once magnificent Amberson family, the leading family of a Midwestern city at the turn of the century.George Amberson Minafer is the spoiled young heir to the Amberson fortune, but America is now entering the automobile age & the conservative Ambersons are ill equiped to deal with the rapid changes.Tarkington intertwines two tragic love stories with the theme of the Ambersons decline and produces one of the really great forgotten novels that I've ever read. Perhaps the book got lost because of the great screen version that Orson Welles produced, but whatever the reason, this is a book that deserves a wider audience and Modern Library is to be applauded for including it on the list.GRADE: A

Irma Lagrasse has taught piano to three generations of villagers, whilst slowly twisting the knife of vengeance; Nico knows a secret; and M. Lenoir has discovered a suppressed and dangerous passion. Revolving around the Café Rose, opposite The House with the Lilac Shutters, this collection of contemporary short stories links a small town in France with a small town in England, traces the unexpected connections between the people of both places and explores the unpredictable influences that the past can have on the present. Characters weave in and out of each other’s stories, secrets are concealed and new connections are made. With a keenly observant eye, Barnby illustrates the everyday tragedies, sorrows, hopes and joys of ordinary people in this vividly understated and unsentimental collection.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The author has a great writing style By TripFiction The House with the Lilac Shutters is a series of vignettes, populated by characters who tumble across the pages. The author has a great writing style, lyrical at times in her use of words and can capture the feel of France, the narrative occasionally straying to England. For me I felt I was observing a merry-go-round as the characters interacted and went about their business. But could I get on that fairground attraction with them? I really struggled. I thought perhaps it was the manner of my reading – I read the first half up to Irma Lagrasse and found a real disconnect. I then tried each “story” on its own subsequent to that but still struggled to get a feel/empathy for the people, beyond the black and white of the page. The feeling of being discombobulated comes right from the cover at the outset – I loved the stark sunny photo, it just shouts SUNSHINE (and where I live, boy, do we need more of that). The photo depicts, however, blue shutters…. So, overall not a book for me.

Ernest William Hornung (7 June 1866 – 22 March 1921) was an English author and poet known for writing the A. J. Raffles series of stories about a gentleman thief in late 19th-century London. Hornung was educated at Uppingham School; as a result of poor health he left the school in December 1883 to travel to Sydney, where he stayed for two years. He drew on his Australian experiences as a background when he began writing, initially short stories and later novels. Hornung’s prose is widely admired for its lucid-yet-simple style. Oliver Edwards, writing in The Times, considered that ”not the least attractive part of the Raffles books is the simple, plain, unaffected language in which each one of them is written”. The obituarist in the same newspaper agrees, and thinks Hornung had ”a power of good and clear description and a talent for mystery and surprise”. Colin Watson also considers the point, and observes that in Hornung’s writing, ”superfluous description has been avoided and account of action is to the point”, while Doyle admired his ”sudden use of the right adjective and the right phrase”, something the writer and journalist Jeremy Lewis sees as a ”flamboyant, Kiplingesque taste for the vivid”.

The Crime Doctor, by E. W. Hornung

Review Mr. Hornung's new hero is not a committer but a preventer of crime, one whose mission to quote his own words, is to busy himself "in saving people from themselves while they're still worth saving, in that prevention which is not only better than cure, but the vital principle of modern therapeutics in every other direction. In keeping good material out of the prison at all cost." Even, when such action implies becoming more or less an accessory after the fact. This idea of "The Crime Doctor" is an excellent one on which to base a series of stories, and Mr. Hornung uses it skillfully. Doctor Dollar has been led by a startling personal experience to interest himself, first in the possible results of surgical operations upon character, and then in the employment of other means to obviate a potential from becoming an actual criminal. His work in this new branch of the profession is aided by all sorts of sanatorium he runs for the benefit of his especial type of patients, to whom he is both physician and father confessor, many of them being quite unaware that they are being treated for "incipient criminality." Naturally a young man in this position is bound to have adventures, particularly when one of his friends and supporters is so important a personage as the Home Secretary of England, his first encounter with whom provides the book's opening episode. Doctor Dollar frequently finds it necessary to play the part of detective in addition to his other two roles, and does it very successfully. Sometimes, in fact, he is rather more detective than physician, as in the affair of "The Golden Key," and had he not been both the matter of "The Schoolmaster Abroad," would have ended disastrously and he himself failed to pay his debt. He is all these and lover to boot in certain of those cases in which the Lady Vera Molye, the book's frank and spirited heroine, is the central figure. And once or twice he actually does become an accessory after the fact, though surely no one could help sympathizing with his decision in the matter of "One Possessed" and his treatment of "The Second Murderer" ---- whose nerves he wrecks in a way the description of which is one of the most interesting things in the book. He is a agreeable and appealing hero, this "Crime Doctor" with the slight squint and the patch of silver hair above one ear, quick-witted, enthusiastic, a man for whom loaded pistols have no terrors--- does he not walk right up to one in the very beginning and collects a number of them before the end?--- and we suspect that his creator is fond of him and does not intend to let his adventures close with this single volume. Else why is the arch villain of them all, the educated and intelligent criminal contemptuous of "battle, murder and sudden death," more to be feared than a dozen of the merely ignorant and vicious, still at liberty upon the very last page? It has been said that throughout his subsequent life Sheridan was afraid of the author of "The School for Scandal"; and it is probable that Mr. Hornung is in somewhat the same position. With each new book of his comes the chorus, "It's good, but it isn't `Raffles'!" Whether this new hero will prove as popular as that debonair thief only time will tell, but in either case he can congratulate himself upon the fact that Doctor Dollar may very likely bring certain aspects of crime to the attention of people who but for him might never have thought of them. So "The Crime Doctor" has a value outside the fulfillment of its ostensible purpose of providing lively entertainment well suited either to the Summer hammock or the Winter easy chair. -- The New York TimesAn excellent addition to any classical detective library...The eight stories contained inThe Crime Doctor are examples of Edwardian crime fiction at its best. Intellect prevails over chaos, and scientific progress can solve all social ills.... This is an attractive volume from a new small press, and a welcome reprint of this lesser-known classic... -- Steven Steinbock, The Strand Magazine

Under British colonial rule, Queen Victoria's armies occupied twenty-five percent of the nations of this planet, implementing parliamentary law and English culture across the globe. No other fictional character bolstered the perception of Anglo-supremacy and Christian virtue than Sherlock Holmes, the UK's foremost consulting detective. But in the early 1900s, the English empire started to crumble. Their involvement in the Boer wars, a difficult and bloody campaign that saw the conception of concentration camps for women and children, had the British citizenry equally divided between support and protest. Out of this moral ambiguity and social turmoil comes EW Hornung's Crime Doctor, a man who himself crippled in that horrific campaign. He is not portrayed as a superman who needs the intellectual challenge of pursuing criminals to sway his boredom, but as an all too human solider, who after being cured of his injury that caused a personality imbalance, has a deep seeded desire to help his fellow man by the eradication of crime, by using any means at his disposal. It would be unfair for me to list any highlights of his adventures since they follow a chronological order and I wouldn't want to rob you of any enjoyment by inadvertently giving away any plot points. But I will say that reading THE CRIME DOCTOR is time well spent.

More than just a great detective By Bill7704 THE CRIME DOCTOR wonderfully captures the time when England's gaslights dimmed in favor of the flicker of the new electric light and her place as a superpower began to slowly corrode. Out of this transitory period emerges E. W. Hornrung's Crime Doctor. After surviving a grievous head wound attained during the folly of the Boer War, a brutal campaign in which atrocities where committed by the English against Boer civilians, John Dollar lays down his rifle to pursue the noble calling of medicine. He establishes an exclusive practice, one that only caters to the criminal classes. It is his belief that most criminals are unbalanced individuals and given the proper treatments can be cure of their compulsions. Of course, there are a few setbacks... deadly setbacks. And these failures serve as the motivation for Dr. Dollar to take a more hostile approach to the business of crime. After reading this absorbing collection, I guarantee you will be wanting more.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Restoration Drama By Bruce Kendall The period of English theater that coincided with the restoration of the crown is best known for comedy. This is with good reason. The comedies of Wycherly, Congreve, Etherege, Davenant, etc. still retain their satirical bite and energy, whereas the drama of the period, especially the attempts at tragedy, appear now dated and lugubrious. Otway, like Dryden, is something of an exception. Though not adhering to the Aristotean rules of tragedy that Dryden practiced, Otway shows in Venice Preserved a great deal of dramatic skill and competence. The plot elements may seem a bit contrived, particularly in comparison to the Greek model, but the dialogue doesn't sink into the sort of heroic, declamatory mode that characterizes so many plays of the period and that sound so laughable to a modern audience. The play was well received in its time, as was his other famous work, The Orphan. Unfortunately for Otway, playwights were not often well compensated in that era, and he like Savage, lived a life of penury. Venice Preserved is still well regarded enough that it is still taught in many college courses that cover Restoratiion theater. Though modern productions are extremely rare, is is a work that retains power and its pathos.

Also some wonderful satire on academia as well as the modern world, which raises important questions on where we are going as a society. In short, it succeeds on several levels. Highly recommended.
