0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Surprising it held my attention and more! By Jay Stenman Based loosely on a silent film serial, or photo play, of the same name by Walter MacNamara, Eustace Hale Ball did an excellent job, in my opinion, of transforming it into a detective story with American social overtones of the times. I had recently read Mr. Ball's "Photoplay Scenarios: How to Write and Sell Them" and began to wonder if he wrote other pieces as well as he had written that "how to" book. While I was doubtful that I would like this book because of the dated ideologies and bygone dialects, the story hooked me in the first few pages. I was pleased to discover that the history and attitudes of the day were so well written into the story. It seems to have been well researched as Mr. Ball drops the names of John D. Rockefeller, JR. and Charles S, Whitman, a New York area District Attorney. Mr. Ball was a feature writer for The New York Sun newspaper as well as being the author of at least 6 more books. I would recommend this book for lovers of classical detective stories of the early 20th Century and historians of the years between 1910 and 1917.
