Of the 4 new Design Originals books that just hit the bookshelves Zen Mandalas is far and away my personal favorite. Suzanne McNeill did a superb job of creating a mini-course in all you could want to know about mandalas. Her illustrations along with those of CZTs Margaret Bremner and Carole Ohl are beautiful and inspiring. But I've been uninspired by the basic books that have offered simplistic designs, often that we'd seen from others, with cleverly reinvented names.Zen Mandalas is different. It marries another favorite activity of mine, coloring mandalas, and offers some original and inspiring content that will make you want to grab a pen and some copics and get to work. This is an excellent contribution to the zentangling field!

Beautiful Examples but Disappointing By AnotherValentino I am a tangle devotee and it pains me to say this but I had very high expectations for this book and I was quite disappointed. Why? No question that the examples and featured artwork is spectacular. I was really hoping for more how-to information and some guidance. In that way, this little book was a letdown. Really not substantive at all as an instruction book. The mandala format has unlimited potential, no doubt about that. But it's best not to expect any step-by-step stuff from this attractive book.

Zen Mandalas has a helpful layout, clear tangle pattern how to instructions, a picture index of tangles with page number in the back of the book, abundant color, and examples from different artists. A wide variety of color media is explored and shown. I think it is a good reference book to go back to for ideas. I plan on trying some of the novel ideas, like using a cut out snowflake as template. If you want to break out of tangling in squares, give this book a try.
