Now that Bro-country rules the radio, songs about dirt roads, tan legs and tall cans have the monopoly on what Love in the American South is all about.         Crash Bang Burn, however, has a slightly different take.        In Georgia, family is supposed to be bedrock, and love a non-stop summertime--but for Braylee and Edie, it's more like quicksand and a bad burn.        Nashville might have penned a song or two about the glories of mama, but nobody mentioned the indoctrinated apron strings that keep grown men tethered like pups on a teat. Which works out great for the Mother Knows Best types--not so great if you're the "little tramp he married," like Braylee.         And as for a country boy like Cross, sex is as easy as telling a girl to "slide on over" in his jacked-up truck. But what's he supposed to do the morning after, when doe-eyed girls like Edie wake up with a case of the Post-Coitus Ties-That-Bind? Because those ties can cut off your air supply faster than you can say "chew tobacco, spit."         Set in the ruralburbs of Nowhere, Georgia, and told through the eyes of three lovers, Crash Bang Burn is a dark, emotionally honest depiction of love and sex, birth and motherhood, divorce and revenge that deep fries the delusions peddled on the silver screen of CMT. Because it's high time that those three-minute anthems about tan lines and tailgates got held up to the light--or got a firecracker stuck up their tailpipe--or both.

Goodwin's Novel a Wild Ride By drbob Dawn Goodwin's second book, following her edgy "Until He Comes," continues the no-holds-barred approach to life, love, and sex in the Deep South. The three characters who form the love triangle tell the story. Cross, the angry pill-popping stud;Edie, the naive and needy college girl; and Braylee, the redneck ex-wife and mother of three collide as each searches for satisfaction. The action is often graphic, with a strong undercurrent of violence (a kind of Fifty Shades of Redneck). Edie and Braylee are moths drawn to the dangerous flame of Cross's passion. While the book is sometimes shocking in its detail, the undercurrents of Freudian neuroses give it depth. The id is obviously dominant as a motivation for all three characters, and the conjunction of sex and violence recalls the eros and thanatos (sex and death) from later Freudian writings such as "Beyond the Pleasure Principle." Dawn Goodwin's writing style is edgy, but she can be lyrical as well, as in her description of the river scene when she and Cross ride out into the woods and share what begins as a pastoral scene. As Goodwin indicates in her acknowledgements, her novel is not for the easily shocked or the faint of heart. It is unflinchingly honest. The novel's ending is a surprise, as the three characters collide in their pursuit of their emotional and sexual needs. If you are ready, grab the reins and hold on for a wild ride.

Halfway in and you know the crash By powerame Take a ride--in big trucks and ATVs--with three characters entwined by circumstance, sex, and revenge. Goodwin depicts the pull of the down-and-out south and shows the vulnerability in her brash characters. This book is the new: edgy, frank, and often searingly funny. Halfway in and you know the crash, seen the bang, but wait until you read the burn.

She has a distinctive style of writing, using fresh metaphors and similes. Nothing is trite. It was a real page turner for me. The explicit sex and raw language would offend very nice people.
