From the Back Cover The dozen stories contained in Tidings of Calm and Storm all use the Midwestern states of the United States as a backdrop. In the eyes of the protagonists, the world is beautiful, mysterious and challenging. The obstacles they must overcome include cowardice, betrayal, and loss. Sometimes each character succeeds in their struggles and sometimes they do not. Any downfall these individuals face often is due to their own failings as human beings. While these stories are easily readable, no one should assume these stories lack depth. By combining symbolism and stark realism in these short sketches, the author is also attempting to illustrate the ability of certain individuals to persevere. There is never a suggestion on any page that the problems we face are easily resolvable. This is the second fully published work by author, Robert S. Miller. Previously he published a short novel called As Sparks Fly Upward, which explored the hypocrisy of a small community. While the stories of Tidings of Calm and Storm at times touch upon a similar theme, there is a greater focus here on honor, perseverance and integrity. Unlike the narrator in the earlier novel, the characters in these stories are still capable of believing in decency.
About the Author ROBERT S. MILLER is a writer, teacher and lawyer who enjoys the outdoors and lives in Minnesota. The author has worked at many additional jobs through the years, while paying off his student loans including warehouse, factory and janitorial work, and clerking in a liquor store. He is in the process of writing a book about his reading experiences, and has drafted four novels and a number of short stories. Tidings of Calm and Storm is his second published full-length work. Also published by the author is the novel, As Sparks Fly Upward.
