Kennan has been chained in his parents’ attic, held prisoner for over thirty years. Having been born a disfigured mute, he has been caged in order to protect him from “a world that he can never be a part of.” When his mother dies, his brother, Karl, moves into the house with his wife and two daughters and becomes Kennan’s caretaker. For a year, Karl’s wife, Diane, puts up with her “retard” brother-in-law. But when she tires of the situation, she delivers her ultimatum: Karl’s family or his brother. Who will Karl choose? And will Kennan ever be free? Until the family secret is released, the Wesley’s will forever be Muted.

By Reading Is My Life If you've read the synopsis, then you know what the book is about. The book itself is heartbreaking. The first half is about what Keenan has to endure being locked in the attic in Karl's house. The second half is very inspiring due to the new characters' Christian beliefs and how they accept Keenan. The story line and the characters are great. I liked the character development for each of the main characters. I was thrown off several times from editorial errors, but just like many authors starting out, a few errors are expected. It is obvious that Mrs. Dean loves to write and she has a great imagination. I look forward to reading future books from her and see how she grows as an author. Muted is a incredible book and very well thought out. If you're looking for a tear jerker, this book is for you.

Laster How a reader can overlook the myriad errors in this hurry-and-get-it-published "debut" novel and give it four or five stars is beyond my comprehension. Yes, it's an intriguing story, but...... when it has obviously had no attention to spellings (scare for scar; lightening for lightning, Santa Clause for Santa Claus, tax instead of tacks, scarred instead of scared, isle for aisle, alright for all right, etc., plus separate words that are compound words: a head, instead of ahead, just to mention one example . . . plus not being right-justified, thereby wasting lots of space-- despite the good story, I can't forget the lack of simple editing. That's what I get for being in 2 critique groups, I suppose.
