Of course, Poe's tales do reflect an older, 19th century style and sensibility of story-telling. Because of that that they may seem overly descriptive and not "exciting" enough to some modern readers, but those who can appreciate Poe's use of language and his uncanny ability to create and sustain an eerie atmosphere will certainly relish the entries in this small collection. It amazes me, however, that the author's name is (or at least WAS) misspelled in the Kindle Store's descriptive blurb. His name is Edgar Allan Poe (with an "A" in "Allan") NOT Edgar Allen Poe (with an "E"). Be that as it may, this is a well-formatted collection of 7 stories. Five are in the horror/terror mode, and two ("The Purloined Letter" and "The Murders in the Rue Morgue") are mysteries starring the early fictional detective, C. Auguste Dupin (whose methodology was later imitated by countless other authors of detective fiction, including Doyle). The book has an active TOC, but there is no introduction, and neither explanatory notes nor illustrations are provided. Nevertheless, as a freebie, it is certainly worth acquiring. Should it ever cease to be free, however, I would recommend purchasing a COMPLETE edition of his works instead; first, because you get a whole lot more great Poe that way (stories, poems, essays); and second, because there are so many inexpensive, complete sets available in the Kindle Store to choose from. (For my "keeper copy" I opted for a particularly well-formatted edition costing only $.99 from Top Five Books; to see it type "Poe Top Five Books" in the Kindle Store searchbox.) Of course ALL his works, being in the public domain, may also be had for free, but a complete bundle is very convenient and provides instant gratification -- not to mention a lifetime of reading and re-reading pleasure.

I have to give this particular ebook 5 stars for many reasons but the main being that the authors/publishers have chosen to share Poe's work for free through this medium. I note this and stress on it so heavily because there are many other ebook versions out there where people are charging up to $5 or more for everything that is included in this (all of the work is in the public domain and I find it quite dishonorable to charge money for text that can be found through a quick google search). Also, top quality formatting!

Plenty of thrills and chills in the 5 horror tales and some excellent plotting and puzzlement in the two mysteries. Heck, even if you are a dyed-in-the-wool Poe fan, this is a nifty little collection. All gems, all worth reading again and again.
