My name isn't "Gypsy" for no reason at all. I love traveling, experiencing new things, and find adventure amidst life. This book did an exquisite job of taking me on a maginificant journey. As the story begins you find the modern explorer discovering he needs something more out of life. So, alas, he ventures off.Unlike historical adventures, he is not riding a horse or a boat- he's driving an old motor cycle and he's doing so across 21st century America. Throughout the journey he meets many note-worthy characters- as any good adventure story must. The characters in this story, although they may not be 'main characters' are memorable and worth getting to know through the pages of a book. The author does a great job of mixing subtle humor with typical human behavior and we get to experience the array of ups and downs that come with being a person.What I especially like about this book is that the main character is traveling through America and picking up odd jobs along the way. He's not getting rich- he's not making himself into some successful rising star. He's simply getting by, learning new talents, experiencing new things, creating relationships with new people. And I think the adventurer in each of us yearns for a similar kind of life that he got to live. Something, at the begining, that is pretty realistic.But as the story goes up, things change for him in a way they most likely wouldn't change for us. He, in a sense, gets a chance at fame. And that's when the story takes a turn from modern adventure tale, to entertaining read. I, as a reader, found myself kind of stepping away from the pages. I was no longer 'beside him' in his adventures- but now I was watching him. And I was eager to see what would happen next. And the turn in the tale left me pushing pages until the very end.After closing the pages of this book I can honestly say it's among one of my favorite modern adventure stories. It did it's job in every way it should. It took me to new places through vivid scenery and fun experiences. It let me meet knew people through amazing character developement. And the book did all of this amdist a great storyline that was easily one of the most memorable I've read in quite some time.
28 of 29 people found the following review helpful. ...to look for America By Timothy Klatt As America struggled with its identity over events like the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the wreckage of Hurricane Katrina, Woodrow Landfair was smack-dab in the middle of it. The readers gets a glimpse of the world through the handlebars of Woodrow's motorcycle in his autobiographical novel, "Land of the Free". Woodrow asks some big questions as he struggles with his own identity. "Land of the Free" is a great read and will surely inspire you to get out and look for America.

I have never met him and never heard of him before. I sent him the same email I give to any author who wants me to review their work-- I told him that I am frequently a brutal reviewer, and that he should be aware of this before sending me a free copy of his book. He sent me my Kindle copy with a note that told me to do my worst.This is not typically the kind of book I read. I'm addicted to fiction, and I wasn't entirely excited about reading the motorcycle ramblings of a young man out to discover America and experience life on the road. I soon realized that this book was something completely different from what I was expecting.I found this book impossible to stop reading and ended up neglecting my chores to absorb the entire book in a single reading.Let me just start by saying that Mr. Landfair is a mesmerizing writer. A few pages into the book I felt like I had entered some kind of soothing dream state. Sometimes I would wonder as another voice seized control of the narrative-- was it still the author? A young runaway on a train? A preacher? A homeless man? A soldier? And then I realized that I didn't care, and that I, too, was just happy to be along for the ride.The temptation to compare Mr. Landfair's work to Jack Kerouac's "On the Road," is a natural one. However, I was impressed by how dissimilar these works actually are. Unlike Kerouac, Landfair's work in not primarily a critique of American popular culture. There is little to no judgment or critical assessment of those he meets, the places he ends up, or lives of those he encounters. That's not to say that American culture isn't laid bare. It is, but it's up to the reader to draw their own conclusions.Either Mr. Landfair has a phenomenal editor or he has spent a great deal of time crafting his book, or both. Whichever is true, the writing is flawless and the imagery is powerful. This quote about post-Katrina New Orleans and those living in the aftermath is a sample of his captivating prose, "We were refugees from a storm-- both a cataclysmic display of nature's indifference and a mind-blowing exhibit of our own inner-conflicts." Page after page is filled with evocative and beautiful prose.How much of this story is real? I honestly don't know and prefer to keep it that way. According to the disclaimer at the beginning of the book it's a work of fiction. Is it?I sincerely hope Mr. Landfair keeps on writing because he has absolutely amazing writing and storytelling talents.
