He made the entire animal train set for his niece using this book. And it truely came out amazing, even through the wear and tear that a 2 year old can inflict on all her toys, her train never fails. He can't wait to try out making one of the airplanes!

The author has plans for cars, construction vehicles, airplanes, boats and trains. All the toys can be made with common pine found at one of the building supply houses. I have not had any trouble interpreting the drawings or instructions. I like that most of the lumber required can be glued up from stock sizes from the store.

There are a lot of projects in here (they say 50) however several of them are individual cars for a train set, which I would argue are pieces of a single project and not separate projects. The stuff looks nice in some cases but the aesthetics that two of the other notable authors come up with are a bit better, namely Jim Makowicki two books and Les Neufeld book on building toy trucks, which look a bit more like pieces of art.My main complaint is that this book kind of misses the mark by making things too complex in several cases, or the drawings/templates are too small to be useful, or it makes the toys so simple you don't really need this book to help you. I doubt I'll make any projects from this book.Like I said, try Makowicki or Neufeld, they have cooler projects, better step-by-step, and nicer drawings. Plus, the toys look way cooler.

The House of Souls, by Arthur Machen

About the Author Arthur Machen (1863 1947) was born Arthur Llewellyn Jones in Caerleon in Wales. Moving to London, but living an impoverished existence, Machen eventually found success with his horror novella 'The Great God Pan', and soon after 'The Three Impostors'. Machen firmly established himself as a master storyteller of decadent supernatural horror, publishing several occult and weird tales with memorable plots and a real skill for the esoteric, creating dark and suspenseful atmospheres.

27 of 29 people found the following review helpful. Essential Reading By Richard Cody Machen (1863-1947) stands as one of the great figures in "weird", or supernatural, literature. This plain but functional reprint of the 1922 U.S. edition of "The House of Souls" contains two of his finest works in the genre - "The White People" and "The Great God Pan".The book opens with an introduction, penned by Machen, which provides insight into the writing of the pieces within and into Machen himself. The first of the four novellas, "A Fragment of Life", concerns the awakening of an "ordinary" man to his mystic and real self. This piece, rather subtle and slow moving, may require rereading for full appreciation."The White People" takes us into the pages of a journal written by a young girl who has been privy since early childhood, via her nursemaid, to ancient and arcane secrets. The journal is the gist of this story and is quite a gripping mix of fantasy and myth (yes, there is a difference). The narrative framework around the journal introduces us, via the discussion of two protagonists, to Machen's fascinating theories about good and evil."The Great God Pan" concerns the appearance of the title entity into the everyday world of men through the agency of a more or less typical "mad doctor"; or, as Machen describes the character, a practitioner of "transcendental medicine".The fourth and final story, "The Inmost Light", is not among my favorites in the Machen cannon. Nonetheless, the narrative about another doctor dabbling in occult realms is an effective mystery and an enjoyable read. All in all, an excellent collection from an excellent writer and requisite reading for any serious student of supernatural fiction.

As a fan of the genre I was surprised to realize I'd never read Machen before even though he influenced some of my favorite auth By Amazon Customer Classic weird horror. As a fan of the genre I was surprised to realize I'd never read Machen before even though he influenced some of my favorite authors (Lovecraft, Poe, etc). This collection doesn't disappoint. Skin-crawling stuff from cover to cover.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Old school weird horror for the cerebral set By DasRuets Machen, a major influence on later weird fiction writers such as Lovecraft and Ashton-Smith, creates eerie, atmospheric stories that imply rather than show. This literary conceit works well for the type of existential horror Machen posits lives behind, beside and next to us. Almost always out of direct sight, the creature and powers are subtle, old and dangerous but passive until disturbed by the hubris of man. In some ways, his characters celebrate and warn against progress and research for fear of what such inquiries might yield. All in all, an essential read for word fiction enthusiasts.

The Heroic Slave, by Frederick Douglass

About the Author Frederick Douglass (1818–1895) was an American social reformer, orator, writer and statesman. After escaping from slavery, he became a leader of the abolitionist movement, gaining renown for his dazzling oratory and incisive antislavery writing. He stood as a living counter-example to slaveholders' arguments that slaves did not have the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens. He became a major speaker for the cause of abolition. In addition to his oratory, Douglass wrote several autobiographies, eloquently describing his life as a slave, and his struggles to be free. His classic autobiography, Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, is one of the best known accounts of American slavery. After the Civil War, Douglass remained very active in America's struggle to reach its potential as a "land of the free". Douglass actively supported women's suffrage. Following the war, he worked on behalf of equal rights for freedmen, and held multiple public offices. Douglass was a firm believer in the equality of all people, whether black, female, Native American, or recent immigrant. He was fond of saying, "I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong."

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Frederick Douglass' Novel By Robin Friedman Although he is best-known for his autobiographies, the great abolitionist and African American leader Frederick Douglass (1818 - 1895) also wrote an important novel. I learned of it in reading about Douglass. I was pleased to have the opportunity to find the book and to discuss it here. Douglass's novel, in fact an extended short story, is available in this new, inexpensive edition as well as in anthologies of his writings.Written in 1853, "The Heroic Slave" is among the first works of fiction by an African American. It is based upon a historical incident: the slave mutiny in November,1841 on the American ship, Creole. The Creole had sailed from Richmond with a cargo of 134 slaves to be sold in New Orleans. A slave with the name of Madison Washington escaped his irons and, together with 18 other slaves, took over the ship and sailed it to the British port of Nassau in the Bahamas. The British refused to return the slaves to their owners, and they remained in Nassau as free people. The United States government did not object. Many Americans responded to the incident by debating whether the United States should have been more aggressive in approaching Britain. However, Madison Washington became a hero to many abolitionists, including Douglass. The Creole incident is similar to the better-known slave rebellion involving the Amstead.Douglass' equates the actions of Madison Washington in commandeering the Creole with the actions of his namesakes, (Madison and Washington) among others, in the Revolutionary War of 1776. Here is how he opens the novel:"The State of Virginia is famous in American annals for the multitudinous array of her statesmen and heroes. She has been dignified by some the mother of statesmen...... Yet not all the great ones of the Old Dominion have, by the fact of their birth-place escaped undeserved obscurity. By some strange neglect, one of the truest manliest, and bravest of her children .... hold now no higher place in the records of that grand old Commonwealth than is held by a horse or an ox. Let those account for it who can, but there stands the fact, that a man who loved liberty as well as did Patrick Henry, - who deserved it as much as Thomas Jefferson, - and who fought for it with a valor as high, an arm as strong, and against odds as great, as he who led all the armies of the American colonies through the great war for freedom and independence, lives now only in the chattel records of his native State."Douglass' short novel is in four parts, the last of which recounts the story of Madison Washington and the Creole. In the preceding three parts of the book, Douglass gives an imaginative portrayal of the earlier life of Madison Washington and his struggle for "freedom and independence". The earlier three parts tell of encounters over a space of years between Washington and a white northerner named Listwell. The first encounter was in 1835 when Listwell was traveling in Virginia and, on a Sunday, hears a lone bloodied slave praying and denouncing the inhumanity of his bondage. Listwell does not speak to the man but resolves instead to become an abolitionist and work towards the end of slavery. In 1840, Listwell and his wife, on their farm in Ohio are approached by a lone traveler who turns out to be Madison Washington. Listwell tells Washington of the earlier encounter in 1835. Washington explains his various attempts at escape and the five years he spent in a swamp before a fire destroyed this site of refuge and threatened him with capture. Listwell helps Washington secure passage on the Underground Railroad to Canada.Part 3 of the book occurs in 1841. Listwell is again in Virginia and staying at an inn. He observes a long coffle of slaves to be sold and sees Madison Washington among them. Listwell manages a few moments alone with Washington and learns that he was recaptured when he returned to Virginia in a failed attempt to rescue his wife. Listwell is able to smuggle three files to Washington, together with ten dollars, before, the group is put on board the Creole to be sold in New Orleans. The final part of the book is recounted in the words of the first mate of the Creole, who describes the manly courageous character of Marcus Washington. Washington spared his life, navigated the Creole through a treacherous storm and led the slaves to freedom.. The mate concludes that he will "never endanger my life again in a cause which my conscience does not approve. I dare say here what many men feel, but dare not speak, that this whole slave-trading business is a disgrace and scandal to Old Virginia." The mate also recounts the justification Madison Washington offered for his actions in terms that recall the Revolution:"God is my witness that LIBERTY, not malice, is the motive for this night's work. I have done no more to those dead men yonder, than they would have done to me in like circumstances. We have struck for our freedom, and if a true man's heart be in you, you win honor us for the deed. We have done that which you applaud your fathers for doing, and if we are murderers, so were they."This short, eloquent novel speaks of the value of independence, freedom, and courage. The novel has been compared to Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" which had appeared about a year earlier. The best parallel to the book, however, is Melville's masterful story of a slave mutiny, "Benito Cereno" Benito Cereno (Bedford College Editions) which appeared in 1855, two years after Douglass' book. Readers interested in American literature or in the African American experience will enjoy getting to know Douglass' "Heroic Slave".Robin Friedman

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fought to End Slavery! By Daycraze Frederick Douglass was one of the foremost leaders of the abolitionist movement, which fought to end slavery within the United States in the decades prior to the Civil War.A brilliant speaker, Douglass was asked by the American Anti-Slavery Society to engage in a tour of lectures, and so became recognized as one of America's first great black speakers. He won world fame when his autobiography was publicized in 1845. Two years later he bagan publishing an antislavery paper called the North Star.Douglass served as an adviser to President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War and fought for the adoption of constitutional amendments that guaranteed voting rights and other civil liberties for blacks. Douglass provided a powerful voice for human rights during this period of American history and is still revered today for his contributions against racial injustice.

I By Eddie Hutchinson Frederick Douglass's 1852 venture into fiction is a short tale of a slave, Madison Washington, and his attempts to escape enslavement and flee to Canada. Along the way, Madison meets Mr. Listwell, a white abolitionist, who befriends him and aids him in his escape. For fear of giving too much away - you'll have to read it for yourself - in the end, we hear of Madison landing on the shores of Nassau, Bahamas.Although it didn't reach the prominence in anti-slavery fiction as Uncle Tom's Cabin (Thrift Edition) of the same year, The Heroic Slave is substantial in the fact that it was written by distinguished abolitionist, Frederick Douglass.

In 1913 James Joyce sent the initial chapter of his novel, “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” to the avant-garde American poet, Ezra Pound. Pound was so impressed by the writing that he urged Joyce to have the work serialized in the London literary magazine, “The Egotist”. Joyce’s initial idea was for a 63 chapter autobiographical novel, which he later abandoned for this more condensed version of five chapters. Dispensing with strict realism and making extensive use of free indirect speech, the novel explores the principal character’s rebellion against the Irish and Catholic conventions that were so much a part of his upbringing and that ultimately culminates in his exile from his mother country. “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” has been named one the top 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century by the Modern Library, and along with “Ulysses” and “Dubliners”, established Joyce as one the leading voices in literary modernism.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Worth a re-read from an aged point of view. By Bettie Banks A classic. Joyce's internal descriptions of the development of consciousness and of thought and language are a fascinating look into the human mind. He does this with an immediacy that is spellbinding at times, tedious at times, and perplexing at times. This difficult book is exciting to re-read after having been forced to read it in college.it is helpful to have the Sparks primer handy to help through the difficult spots, to guide and explain. Otherwise much of the incredible richness could be lost.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A book everyone should read By Christine Johnson This is one of the all time classics of English literature. Joyce's language in this book is accessible and as many critics have said of his language, the most elegant and meaningful use of English, partly because of its Irish origin. Likewise, Stephen Daedelus as the hero is himself a classic of erudition and a suffering and painful life. This is entirely worth the effort of reading a difficult book.

Review

"Two dozen super-cute yet sturdy pieces sized for newborns through toddlers of 18 months. Color-blocking, chevrons, mesh lace, hoodies, zip-ups, multi yarn-the hottest trends in knitting for grownups are here converted into chic crochet for the smallest customers. Additionally, a quick color change renders most of the projects unisex."  —knitsimple

Clark I was delighted to flip through the pages of this book because there were so many items that were refreshingly new. There were no tired old "granny" type items that are too abundant in the marketplace. I already made one sweater and was thrilled to give it as a gift.Only constructive criticism is: I would enjoy seeing each piece drawn (with measurements) prior to joining them. I am an intermediate-level crocheter, and this would greatly assist my skill level. And just because I was thrilled with this book, I purchased another by the same author. I so look forward to many fun hours crocheting.

By Rocky Top Gal This was my first crochet for baby book and overall I think it deserves 4 stars however it would have been great if the yarns used were easier to find and not so expensive. I crocheted several of the patterns but used yarns I purchased at my local store and from the rave's I received I think everyone loved them. The book title claims the projects can be made in a weekend, but I've crocheted for years and I don't think there was one project that could be made in a weekend. So in ending my review let me say I would purchase this book again and would recommend it as well. In my opinion patterns for babies are hard to find that can be used for everyday wear and this book has several and also the more dressy patterns as well.

They detail the yarns by manufacturer, Rowan & Jaeger and Colinette, but do not rate them on the 1-6 system that yarn is rated at as to weight. The two US suppliers, one in New Hampshire and one in Pennsylvania don't have websites to order yarn from, making it hard to make a good substitution of yarn. Another problem: Cover coat is done on a 7mm needle, we only have 6.5 and 8 mm needles--no 7mm.

By Amazon Customer Who would have thought a book would be recommended by a woman who lived so many years before me? Louisa Mae Alcott mentioned this book in her book "Little men" (what I consider a recommendation)... & I'm sure glad she did! I have a boy close in age to the main character & so, I Connected to it immediately! The boy turning to God for strength through his trials is many a woman's hope for their children & though written long ago, is a joy to read!

By Ellen Montgomery I loved this book, I found out about it from Louisa May Alcott's "Jo's Boys". The boy in the story has to go through a lot, yet he learns to find strength from the One Friend who will never forsake him. It was an encouragement to me and I enjoyed the story (although the language can be a bit hard to understand). I recommend this book to everyone who loves reading classic books!

I recommend it to anyone raising little boys, what amazing character qualities instilled in him. The language is more old English style so your vocabulary will increase by just reading it. Mom's you might cry just to warn you.
