Barcelona Shadows, by Marc Pastor

Review "'Barcelona Shadows' emerges as a winning blend of moody atmospherics and supercharged thrills, and eventually resembles Pastor’s description of the dastardly Enriqueta: 'captivating and horrifying all at the same time.'" -  Malcolm Forbes,The Star Tribune"Pastor’s humble but effective storytelling innovation is to have Death narrate the story…  It sounds gimmicky, but in Pastor’s able hands (neatly translated by Mara Faye Lethem) it adds a fateful dimension... Pastor is also skilled at creating brief, crisp scenes that get into the minds not only of his detective but of two captive little girls, and other characters as well. He’s grittily insightful into the psychology of a city under stress… [a] dark, fast-moving tale." — Blogcritics"Gruesome, creepy and hugely entertaining." - The Times"As gruesome as it is gripping... the writing is extraordinarily vivid... Highly recommended." - Independent"Our creepy storyteller is as compelling as the murderess whose monstrous crimes he chronicles... Pastor makes it all breathe effortlessly." - Financial Times"Imagine a gothic, Technicolor, historical western, by turns lurid and tersely gripping, and sometimes genuinely frightening... A great story." - Telegraph"Redolent of Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert Louis Stevenson and David Peace." - Vice"Brims with the stuff of a classic adventure novel passed through the sieve of post-modernity, and which captivates the reader from the very start. Essential reading for all who love literature." - Sebastià Bennassar, Diari de Mallorca"Blends intrigue, terror and police investigation from an original narrative perspective and with a recreation of the period that evokes the gothic environs of Poe and Conan Doyle." - Rosa Maria Piñol, La Vanguardia"A fantastic novel." - Ernest Alós, El Periodico"Mesmerizing... the writing is brilliant, a thing of beauty." - Books, Bones and Buffy"Wonderfully written with a great story, engaging characters, murder, mystery and muck!'" - Mean Streets"A terrifying read, but a bloody good one too." - Crime Squad"Blackly entertaining and gruesome gothic murder mystery." - Metro

If the Dexter novels make you squirm then give this a pass. However, if you enjoy dark mysteries this is a great option that will leave you breathless and slightly nauseated. The book is translated from the Catalan and that fact alone would normally make me pass on it but the story looked so interesting that I decided to give it a try anyway and I'm so glad I did. The translator did an amazing job and I didn't feel like I was reading a translation at all.The story itself is beyond creepy. I found myself thinking over and over again "Wow, that is so messed up!". The author did a brilliant job of bringing a truly sociopathic character to life for the reader in all of their evil glory.I really liked Inspector Corvo and he felt very authentic to me as did his world. I could just feel the dark, depressing world descending upon me each time I opened the book. It really made all the difference in the world to enhance the feeling of dread I felt while reading. This was an excellent, truly terrifying read that left me deeply disturbed. It is the perfect read for a dark night right before Halloween. I highly, highly recommend it to anyone looking for a truly bone chilling read.

I really liked the ending, and even appreciated the multiple points of narration but was not drawn in by the story as much as I thought I would be. Pacing and setting were both fine as well, perhaps it was because I just did not like any of the characters that much. This is definitely worth the time to read for fans of Gothic literature, and people who enjoy a Spanish setting or the turn of the 20th century time period? The chapters lengths are just right, and writing is intense and to the point with some graphic scenes as well as attention to detail of the time period that makes me glad to be living now ha ha. A good read for sure, which I probably did not enjoy as much because it falls a bit outside of my usual reading genre.

Gothic crime By John Pickett Very bleak crime that seems to be a procedural yet there's is an omnipresent commentator who we must percieve as death or judgement. I enjoyed the descriptions of Barcelona. The main character evokes a many failed hero from the best of American tradition yet there is a Catalan feel to his angst.. Down a mean Ramblas our hero must walk.
