0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. where young women fall in love, new generations are made By chess player Tough times; a historical novel, two -almost- true stories, and a surprising end.With the 19th century atmosphere well described in the lives of a few women in South West Finland and Jamaica during two generations, the contract between the cold, dark, and rural Finland and the Caribbean forces the reader to keep the attention during several twists, where young women fall in love or get raped, new generations are made, and hope is preserved despite the tough circumstances. Being a male reader yet interested in different cultures and history, please regard my comments as subjective impressions of this serious novel:Written mostly from a female perspective, we get an insight in the different cultures, and the living conditions in these locations being a result of a further past; with some dark elements as slavery and abuse i wouldn't recommend it below age 17 or so, yet there is some philosophical element where despite the misery the resilience, acceptance, and hope of some main characters is striking. If it were not for a 'goblin' and some highly subjective elements by the women i would describe it as based on real history; yet is is a historical novel, and if there were some illustrations, or possibly pictures of those times (next edition?) i might give it five stars; generally well written, with various descriptions not only of the main characters involved but also the surroundings, households, landscapes, both in Finland, or Jamaica, where the author also has been. Not the first book by this promising author with Finnish origin(!), who already is mastering various styles, from who we can expect some more interesting literature to come.
