From the Inside Flap With no itinerary and no plan for return, an embellishing opportunist pawns his possessions, buys a used motorcycle and sets out to create a better life on the roads of America.Weaving through all corners of the country for five years, the affable hustler takes innumerable jobs in myriad towns, witnessing and experiencing countless lives. Joining the work crew of a traveling carnival, he discovers both a stage name and a career -- telling the stories of all the people he met on the road, but telling them as his own.Given a rare opportunity to debut in the national spotlight, the fantastically reinvented hero attempts to recall the candid truth behind his own heavily embellished, self-aggrandized, larger-than-life persona. Desperate to discover his own identity, he attempts to flee the life he created only to become a suspected con-man, a fugitive, and the subject of a nationwide manhunt. Accompanied by a young runaway and a disillusioned war veteran, the elusive protagonist attempts a 48-state search for the truth that might set him free.

My name isn't "Gypsy" for no reason at all. I love traveling, experiencing new things, and find adventure amidst life. This book did an exquisite job of taking me on a maginificant journey. As the story begins you find the modern explorer discovering he needs something more out of life. So, alas, he ventures off.Unlike historical adventures, he is not riding a horse or a boat- he's driving an old motor cycle and he's doing so across 21st century America. Throughout the journey he meets many note-worthy characters- as any good adventure story must. The characters in this story, although they may not be 'main characters' are memorable and worth getting to know through the pages of a book. The author does a great job of mixing subtle humor with typical human behavior and we get to experience the array of ups and downs that come with being a person. What I especially like about this book is that the main character is traveling through America and picking up odd jobs along the way. He's not getting rich- he's not making himself into some successful rising star. He's simply getting by, learning new talents, experiencing new things, creating relationships with new people. And I think the adventurer in each of us yearns for a similar kind of life that he got to live. Something, at the begining, that is pretty realistic. But as the story goes up, things change for him in a way they most likely wouldn't change for us. He, in a sense, gets a chance at fame. And that's when the story takes a turn from modern adventure tale, to entertaining read. I, as a reader, found myself kind of stepping away from the pages. I was no longer 'beside him' in his adventures- but now I was watching him. And I was eager to see what would happen next. And the turn in the tale left me pushing pages until the very end. After closing the pages of this book I can honestly say it's among one of my favorite modern adventure stories. It did it's job in every way it should. It took me to new places through vivid scenery and fun experiences. It let me meet knew people through amazing character developement. And the book did all of this amdist a great storyline that was easily one of the most memorable I've read in quite some time.

The readers gets a glimpse of the world through the handlebars of Woodrow's motorcycle in his autobiographical novel, "Land of the Free". Woodrow asks some big questions as he struggles with his own identity. "Land of the Free" is a great read and will surely inspire you to get out and look for America.

I have never met him and never heard of him before. I sent him the same email I give to any author who wants me to review their work-- I told him that I am frequently a brutal reviewer, and that he should be aware of this before sending me a free copy of his book. He sent me my Kindle copy with a note that told me to do my worst. This is not typically the kind of book I read. I'm addicted to fiction, and I wasn't entirely excited about reading the motorcycle ramblings of a young man out to discover America and experience life on the road. I soon realized that this book was something completely different from what I was expecting.I found this book impossible to stop reading and ended up neglecting my chores to absorb the entire book in a single reading.Let me just start by saying that Mr. Landfair is a mesmerizing writer. A few pages into the book I felt like I had entered some kind of soothing dream state. Sometimes I would wonder as another voice seized control of the narrative-- was it still the author? A young runaway on a train? A preacher? A homeless man? A soldier? And then I realized that I didn't care, and that I, too, was just happy to be along for the ride. The temptation to compare Mr. Landfair's work to Jack Kerouac's "On the Road," is a natural one. However, I was impressed by how dissimilar these works actually are. Unlike Kerouac, Landfair's work in not primarily a critique of American popular culture. There is little to no judgment or critical assessment of those he meets, the places he ends up, or lives of those he encounters. That's not to say that American culture isn't laid bare. It is, but it's up to the reader to draw their own conclusions.Either Mr. Landfair has a phenomenal editor or he has spent a great deal of time crafting his book, or both. Whichever is true, the writing is flawless and the imagery is powerful. This quote about post-Katrina New Orleans and those living in the aftermath is a sample of his captivating prose, "We were refugees from a storm-- both a cataclysmic display of nature's indifference and a mind-blowing exhibit of our own inner-conflicts." Page after page is filled with evocative and beautiful prose. How much of this story is real? I honestly don't know and prefer to keep it that way. According to the disclaimer at the beginning of the book it's a work of fiction. Is it?I sincerely hope Mr. Landfair keeps on writing because he has absolutely amazing writing and storytelling talents.

  • The Mysterious Island (French: L'Île mystérieuse) is a novel by Jules Verne, published in 1874. The original edition, published by Hetzel, contains a number of illustrations by Jules Férat. The novel is a crossover sequel to Verne's famous Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and In Search of the Castaways, though its themes are vastly different from those books. An early draft of the novel, initially rejected by Verne's publisher and wholly reconceived before publication, was titled Shipwrecked Family: Marooned With Uncle Robinson, seen as indicating the influence on the novel of Robinson Crusoe and The Swiss Family Robinson. Verne developed a similar theme in his later novel, Godfrey Morgan (French: L'École des Robinsons, 1882).

The Mysterious Island: Golden Illustrated Classics (Comes with a Free Audiobook), by Jules Verne

Review Adventure novel by Jules Verne, published in French in three volumes as L'Ile mysterieuse in 1874 and included in his popular science-fiction series Voyages extraordinaires (1863-1910). The Mysterious Island follows the adventures of a group of castaways who use their survivalist savvy to build a functional community on an uncharted island. A hot-air balloon carrying five passengers and a dog escapes from Richmond, Va., during the American Civil War. It is blown off course and deposited near an obscure island. One of the castaways nearly dies after a skirmish with pirates; he is saved by the unexplained appearance of medicine after the pirates are unexpectedly routed. The group later discovers that their secret helper is the reclusive Captain Nemo (first introduced in Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea), who dies and is buried at sea in his submarine. The castaways are eventually saved by a passing ship. --Wordsworth Editions

121 of 123 people found the following review helpful. Is Mysterious Island Verne's best novel? By Joanna Daneman Many of Verne's novels have become cultural icons for Americans though Verne was French and we read him in translation. Nevertheless, his philosophy that enlightened good will and scientific advancement would save society is so close to American idealism, he seems much more American than almost any of his contemporaries.Everyone is familiar with Around the World in 80 Days and 20,000 Leagues. For some reason, The Mysterious Island is not read as widely. Yet, in my opinion, it is Verne's best and most rewarding novel. The opening of Myserious Island reads a bit like a serious version of "Wizard of Oz." Cyrus, Pencroft, Herbert, Neb and Gideon, and a dog named Top make a daring escape from a Civil War prison in a balloon, but the balloon is blown way off course to an uncharted volcanic island. These men are worthy souls; Captain Cyrus is an inspiring leader, Pencroft, an earthy but hardworking sailor. Gideon is kind of a "everyman" -- observant, strong and resourceful and loving, and Herbert a young, knowlegeable naturalist. These men and their dog Top conquer the island's challenges and make the very best out of their isolation on the small island. But are they prepared for the surprises the island has for them--and the ultimate surprise in the second half of the book. The suspense keeps the reader turning the pages through a great deal of descriptive information about nature, chemistry, physics and engineering. This is classic Verne and what really put the Science in Science Fiction. One reason Mysterious Island may not have developed the strong audience of the other Verne novels is that there is so much detail and scientific discussion. That is rough going if you have little interest in such subjects. There are abridged versions that cut a lot of the description, but frankly, the science is what I love best about the book. How Cyrus and company make nitroglycerin and use it to reshape their island home is one of my favorite chapters in sci-fi literature. If you liked Swiss Family Robinson as a child, you would surely enjoy Mysterious Island. It's one of Verne's best works and deserves to be read.

Cross I have not had a chance to talk about any of the books that I have read recently, but I decided that today I would. Recently upon getting my Kindle 2 I downloaded for free a copy of Jules Verne's The Mysterious Island. One of the great things about owning a Kindle is that the second you own it you can download many classics for free and you already have a well stocked library full of classic novels that triumph over some of today's commercial attempts.I really recommend reading this book. It starts off slowly, and there were times in the middle of the book that I began to get overwhelmed by the complex descriptions that Verne offers about how this band of Civil War escapees manage their life on a strange island. Verne goes into such depth that the reader can actually tell that Verne probably spent many hours in his own contemplation about what he would do if he were stranded on an island. And let me be the first to say that if I were stranded on an island I would want Jules Verne right beside me. His knowledge of the subject went further than you would expect it to and considering that the book was written in the 1870's. The type of information that was possessed by the characters given by Verne surpasses what most people would know today. It wasn't too far after being stranded that the band of men were making pottery, iron and planning to make guns. At one point they even knew to take small whale bones and hunt with them. These are things that are lost in today's world of luxury.I think the beauty of the story lies in its ability to transport you to this other place and time. As I read the book I felt as if I was back in the 1800's trying to survive and thinking as I read, "what would I do?" It is an excellent book that could be read by young and old alike.

So I am searching out classics to read on the Kindle that cost $0. Came across Mysterious Island and I have been captivated by it. Very good read. Intelligent with adventure. After reading the book, I wondered about any movies made about this book. I saw one listed on Netflix that had giant sea monsters fighting the island inhabitants. The movie also had women on the island with the men. I guess whomever tried to sell the idea of the book to Hollywood was afraid of just presenting the book as is. No sea monsters and no women. I think the movie version would be "a little" like Castaway. To sum up. The book is free and easy to read, and enjoyable. Thanks for your time.

There has got to be a fourth in it, and the fourth must be a man.—You understand?” The speaker, who was known as the Colonel, took the cigar he was smoking from his mouth the better to emphasise his words, and looked gravely into the serious faces of his audience. It comprised a man of middle-age, bearded, secretive, calculating; and one other.

Excerpt from Artistic Anatomy of the Human FigureThe Author has endeavoured to make this little work sufficiently comprehensive to be useful to the general student in the art of drawing the human figure. In reference to the plates, it may he observed that the bones are marked by letters, the muscles by numerals. To the same bones and the same muscles, - wherever they may occur through each section, - the same letters or numbers will apply. The direction of the lines of shading in the plates is made to correspond to the direction of the muscular fibres; the consideration of this being necessary to that dimpling and folding of the outer skin, which painters more than sculptors love to indicate, - perhaps too freely.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Good texts, less images By Larissa Like the previous comments, the texts are useful, but i was looking for a book to fast reference to drawing, to answer some question when i work, and the book has few pictures, images or drawings. I was hopping a little more!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Nice antique By Moon Cat Written in 1852 with 23 drawings, this is primarily a verbal description of the bones and muscles. Within its scope it does fine, although as I am more visually oriented, verbal doesn't quite do it for me. Most interesting but frustrating were the constant referrals to ancient famous statues of which there were no photos or drawings. Yet it was amusing, especially after describing male anatomy like the pectoral muscle and then demurely stating, the difference between that and female anatomy is obvious, of course! Comments on how changing position emphasizes different muscles and dips. Worthwhile, but I am sure it has been surpassed by more modern editions since the civil war.

Mr. Gabriel Bearse was happy. The prominence given to this statement is not meant to imply that Gabriel was, as a general rule, unhappy. Quite the contrary; Mr. Bearse's disposition was a cheerful one and the cares of this world had not rounded his plump shoulders. But Captain Sam Hunniwell had once said, and Orham public opinion agreed with him, that Gabe Bearse was never happy unless he was talking. Now here was Gabriel, not talking, but walking briskly along the Orham main road, and yet so distinctly happy that the happiness showed in his gait, his manner and in the excited glitter of his watery eye. Truly an astonishing condition of things and tending, one would say, to prove that Captain Sam's didactic remark, so long locally accepted and quoted as gospel truth, had a flaw in its wisdom somewhere.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Shavings - a heartwarming story By ta The story was well-developed, and the characters were wonderful. I had a hard time putting it down, once started. There were funny areas, tearful times, but overall, the book was well worth the read. I'd recommend it to others. The main character has so much to give, and gives to so many, that how he changed as the story progressed, was beautifully recognized. Great dialogue and hard to put down.

Mrs. Gratz opened her eyes and looked out at the drizzle that made the Christmas morning gray. Her bed stood against the window, and it was easy for her to look out; all she had to do was to roll over and pull the shade aside. Having looked at the weather she rolled again on to the broad flat of her back and made herself comfortable for awhile, for there was no reason why she should get up until she felt like it.

The Thin Santa Claus By Kathryn W The Thin Santa Claus is about a widow and a guy who never intended to be a Santa Claus probably too tame for today's readers but worth a read. It is also included in The Giant Christmas Collection: 30 Stories, 25 Poems, and 75 Carols which might be a better buy.
